Agoura High's Comedy Sportz Team Hopes to Score Big in March Madness Competition

The student team, which has won the regional competition in past years, moves on to the semi-finals this weekend in Hollywood.

March Madness is the name given to a regional competition amongst Southern California's top 32 Comedy Sportz student teams. Once again, Agoura High is making inroads.

Currently the reigning champs, they will compete in the semi-finals at Comedy Sportz LA in Hollywood this weekend.

"It's really fun to play against other schools," said Rachel Paul, 17, team manager. "Last week we played against a team from San Diego and they were good. They only lost by one point. It was a brutal match."

Comedy Sportz pits two teams of improv comedians against each other in friendly competition. Played just like a sport, each team competes for the most laughs. The show is complete with referee and audience participation.

Improvisation is challenging, according to Rachel, so the team is coached by Cinco Paul, Rachel's dad, and a representative from the professional team who comes in every other week.

The games are also themed and skits are chosen by the audience.

"For one game, the theme was 'a day in the life of Shakespeare,' so we had to compete in that manner," Rachel said.

Another game had them doing musical theater.

"My dad's really good at that, so he's been very helpful," she said.

Rachel, whose been on the team since freshman year, will attend Yale in the fall. Though she doesn't have a career goal yet, she plans to become active in the Ivy League school's renowned improv theater.
