The Advantages of Having a Small Dog

Make no bones about it, large or small, regardless of color or shape, dogs are wonderful. Every breed, mixed or pure offers its own set of advantages and the smaller pups have many.

Right now Agoura Shelter is loaded with small dogs. As of this writing there are twenty-two Chihuahuas, two Shih Tzus, one Miniature Pincer and a Miniature Poodle awaiting adoption.

·      Smaller dogs, on a whole, tend to live longer. Adopting a 7-year old is just middle age for many.

·      Smaller dogs often have fewer health issues than larger dogs.

·      Small dogs are less expensive to feed. If your pet-care budget is limited, then a smaller dog might be suitable for your lifestyle.

·      Supplies, such as beds, collars, leashes and crates come with a slightly less expensive price tag. Overall, smaller dogs tend to put less strain on their owners’ wallets.

·      Bathing and grooming a small dog is easy. Your kitchen sink is all you need to get the job done.

·      A small dog usually means less of a mess to clean up.

·      Smaller dogs are great for apartment, condo or small yard living. If space is limited, then smaller dogs will have an easier time feeling comfortable in an otherwise cramped environment.

·      Small dogs are easy to transport. They can easily ride in a carrier or crate in a small car and lifting them is simple.

·      Many small dogs require minimal exercise. A short walk will often suffice.

·      Small dogs can sleep with you without taking over the bed.

·      Small dogs make great lap cuddlers.
