2013 Reyes Adobe Days Festival Expands, Grand Marshal Announced

A fourth day has been added to the 9th annual RAD festival, and ABC7's Elex Michaelson, originally from Agoura Hills, will be this year's grand marshal

To accommodate a growing audience, the City of Agoura Hills has expanded this year's Reyes Adobe Days festival from three to four days and will take place October 3-6.

"With the popularity of the Senior Fiesta and Night at the Adobe, both which have traditionally been on Friday, we are now dedicating a full day to each of these events," Amy Brink, Agoura Hills director of community services, said in a pres release.

This year's parade grand marshal will be Agoura's own Elex Michaelson, a general assignment reporter for ABC7, it was announced at a press conference Tuesday morning.

"It's so surreal, I couldn't believe it," Michaelson told Patch. "I'm humbled and honored and excited about this opportunity.

Michaelson attended Willow Elementary, Lindero Canyon Middle School and graduated Agoura High in 2004.

"I was always super active in all of the schools," he said. "I was student body president at both Lindero and Agoura."

Michealson was also co-captain of the high school basketball team, in the drama club and was involve with several community programs, including championing Measure E.

The award-winning journalist said he often returns to town to visit friends, get his hair cut and enjoy the surroundings. This will be his first RAD festival.

"Yeah, I'm so excited. What a great way for the community to learn about local history," he said.

Art at the Adobe

Keeping things in the family, this year's featured artist is Crystal Michaelson, Elex's mother.

"I'm honored to be part of Reyes Adobe Days," said the mixed media artist in a press release. "I miss the intimate community setting of Agoura Hills, having lived here for 23 years."

Crystal said her work is inspired by the Santa Monica landscapes, "often walking Old Agoura and Zuma Beach and picking up discarded objects" that she incorporates into her pieces.

New Sponsorship

Camp Bow Wow returns as title sponsor for the event. A new sponsor this year is Yoga Upstairs.

"We are a small family and community studio, and we wanted to reach out and be part of this community event," said Cara Sorkin, co-owner.

Activities Galore

Featured events this year will include live entertainment, children's activities, the Ladyface Ale Beer Garden and the BIG BAD RAD.
