The daughter of American expatriates, Julie Walmsley was born in Manila and spent her nomadic upbringing back and forth between the Metro Manila and San Francisco Bay areas. She started college in Santa Barbara, and then worked in various sectors before returning to school to finish her undergraduate work in her late 20s at UCLA, graduating in 2007. The last project she worked on was an investigative book about anti-aging medicine, and most of her other work has involved a lot of library research, scouring press releases and transcripts of congressional hearings, parsing statistics, and other things that keep her behind a computer or on the phone. She finds being out in the community and talking to people, finding new stories, and learning a different style of reporting is fun and challenging.
