Patch's L.A. Sales Team 'Gives 5' at Union Rescue Mission

Volunteers prepare meals and clean tables as part of a companywide service program.

Advertising managers of the Southland’s Patch.com sites took time off from meetings with business owners to volunteer recently at the Union Rescue Mission on Skid Row in Downtown, Los Angeles, serving about 500 meals for homeless men, women and children.

“It was a great event,” said Patch Regional Publisher David Peck. “Great to know you make a difference and can give someone in need a warm meal."

As the volunteers made ham sandwiches, cut potatoes, filled tubs with peaches and cleaned tables, they were performing a day of service Feb. 17 under the Patch Give 5 program. The initiative encourages Patch editors and sales teams across the country to donate five days of service each year to the areas they cover.

The Union Rescue Mission, at 545 S. San Pedro St., houses about 1,000 people and serves about 3,500 meals a day. It also provides clothing, medical and dental care, recovery programs, transitional housing, legal assistance, education, counseling and job training to those in need. Established in 1891, it is the oldest rescue mission in Los Angeles and one of the largest of its kind in the United States.

“The [Union Rescue Mission] has the day-to-day operation wired and some of the workers themselves are rehabilitating and trying to make a difference in their life, too,” Peck said.
