Agoura Goes to the Dogs

Camp Bow Wow hosted a successful dog adoption event on Saturday.

hosted its first big dog outdoor adoption event with Labs and Buddies Rescue, a no-kill rescue organization committed to saving all types of Labrador Retrievers, Lab mixes and other mixed breeds.

According to Camp Bow Wow director Paul Berkovitz, at least two dogs found homes. "I think it was very successful," said Berkovitz. "It's like the saying goes, 'You can't change the world by adopting one dog, but you can change the world for that one dog,' and its very gratifying to see these dogs get adopted to their forever homes."

Camp Bow Wow has had an ongoing relationship with Labs and Buddies since its inception in 2009. "Camp Bow Wow has been very good to us," said Laura Portillo, the rescue's director. "They often keep our dogs on premises and foster them for us. This is our first big event with them.

Many of the dogs in Portillo's care come from such 'high kill' shelters as Kern County, Downey and South LA, according to Portillo.

Happiness came to the Shihabi family, as they found their "dream dog" in the form of Robbie, a 7-month-old Labrador-Spaniel mix. "We all just fell in love with him immediately," said Chrissy Shihabi of Thousand Oaks. "We had been looking for a dog for several months and decided to come here today. The kids are especially excited."

When asked what was so special about Robbie, 10-year-old Ryan Shihabi said, "Everything!"

Camp Bow Wow plans on holding similar events each quarter, according to Berkovitz, and Patch will bring the updated information.
