Summer Edition: Parks & Rec's Sony Delight Team Forces The Upset

"Sony Delight" captures the upset victory in the closing seconds of regulation.

With summer almost upon us, and high school sports shut down for the season, Sports Notebook will be featuring the games and competitions held at the Agoura Hills/Calabasas Community Center. These adult-played sports are all sponsored by the Agoura Hills Parks & Recreation Center. We call it our Summer Edition.

BASKETBALL

Thursday "C" League

  • "A-Town" entered Thursday's game looking for its first win while the "Hammers" were focused on keeping its 3-0 record untarnished. The game was extremely close throughout, with the lead for both teams reaching no more than five points. The "Hammers" eventually closed out the game 63-55 with a stellar play by Tony David who posted 20 points, five assists and 12 rebounds. Brandon Ledford (Hammers) helped to control the tempo and facilitate to his teammates, posting 11 key assists. Mike Robbins (A-Town) and Matt Baldwin (A-Town) combined for 33 points, seven assists and seven rebounds in a losing, but valiant effort. "A-Town" now slides to 0-4 and is still looking for its first regular season win while the "Hammers" continue to ride a winning streak and moves to 4-0 with sole possession of first place.
  • "Hustle Hard" and the "Sharpshooters" both entered Thursday's game looking to move up in the rankings. "Hustle Hard" pulled away early in the first half creating a 12 point lead. The "Sharpshooters" stormed back in the second with strong overall play by John Paul Abraham, who posted 20 points, four assists and 8 rebounds. Matthew Kahn (Sharpshooters) and Chris Malden (Sharpshooters) combined for 12 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds in route to capturing a much needed 65-62 victory. In a losing effort, Tim Willey (Hustle Hard) contributed 10 points and 16 rebounds. "Hustle Hard" slides to 1-3 while the "Sharpshooters" move to 3-1 with sole possession of second place.

Thursday "D" League

  • "Rock Sugar" played a tough "Old Time Magic" squad late Thursday evening. While "Rock Sugar" was looking to stay undefeated, "Old Time Magic" was determined to knock off the first place team. "Rock Sugar" started the game strong with stellar overall defensive play, creating a six point lead at half. Late in the second half, the "Old Time Magic" took the lead by two points and never lost it. Todd Wolfson (Old Time Magic) led his team with 17 points, 11 rebounds and two assists. In a losing effort Topher Hutchison (Rock Sugar), Tom Becht (Rock Sugar) and Jabbar Alleyne combined for 27 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists. "Old Time Magic" dominated the offensive boards which proved to be too much in route to its 37-35 victory. "Rock Sugar" suffered its first loss but is currently tied for first place with the "Old Time Magic" with a record of 3-1.
  • "The Blazers" entered the game looking to capture its first win against "The Dudes." The game was extremely close throughout the entire first half. "The Dudes" started the second half strong and coasted to a 67-46 victory behind strong play by Sergei Lepeshinski, who led his team with 25 points, five assists and 11 rebounds. Steve Naison (The Dudes) also added 14 points and six assists in route towards victory. Dean Zahraei (The Blazers) posted 20 points and 11 assists, but it proved to be not enough in Thurday evening's match-up. With the win, "The Dudes" now share possession of first place with a 3-1 record. "The Blazers" are still searching for its first win of the season with an 0-4 record.
  • "Xavier" entered Thursday's game looking for a much needed win against a strong "Smooth" squad. The game remained intense and at a feverish pace throughout. With eight lead changes of no more than three points, one team was definitely going to earn its win. Xavier stayed close and was able to finish strong and capture the 46-43 upset victory. "Xavier" was lead by Kevin Martin and Mike Corridori who combined for 28 points, 15 rebounds and two blocked shots. Chad Anderson (Xavier) also added 11 points to help acquire the win. In a losing effort, "Smooth" was lead by Mike Rudberg and Mike Taylor who combined for 37 points and 21 rebounds. "Smooth" now slides to 1-3 while "Xavier" moves up the rankings with a 2-2 record.
  • "Sony Delight" entered Thursday evening's late game desperately looking for a win against a very fundamentally sound "Our 6th Man" squad. Both teams started off slow in the first half combining for a total of 15 points. In an extremely close second half, "Sony Delight" was able to edge "Our 6th Man" with clutch free throws down the stretch. Brad Helgesen (Sony Delight) and Joe Devita (Sony Delight) combined for 22 points and 17 rebounds in route to their 36-33 upset victory. In a losing effort, Mike Casper (Our 6th Man) led his team with 17 points and five rebounds. "Sony Delight" now has a 2-2 record while "Our 6th Man" falls to 2-2 overall.
