Summer Edition: Parks & Rec's Rock Sugar Team Stays Undefeated

The Agoura Recreation Center's Rock Sugar basketball team pushes their winning streak to three with another solid performance.

With summer almost upon us, and high school sports shut down for the season, Sports Notebook will be featuring the games and competitions held at the Agoura Hills/Calabasas Community Center. These adult-played sports are all sponsored by the Agoura Hills Parks & Recreation Center. We call it our Summer Edition.

BASKETBALL

  • recently started its adult basketball summer league. The league is open to any adults over the age of 18 who are looking for a competitive season of basketball. The games are played at the . They offer a "D" league for moderate players and a "C" league for advanced, both consisting of 11 games plus playoffs.  Teams have a maximum of ten players, and game fees are $35 per game. Teams have the option of playing on Sundays or Thursdays prior to the beginning of the season.

  • Although they were shorthanded,  "A-Town"  battled "Hustle Hard" in a regular season game.  Each team was coming off an 0-2 start and looking to get its first win of the season. "Hustle Hard" came out strong, taking an early lead, but "A-Town" never gave up, keeping the score close throughout. In the last five minutes of regulation, the lead changed six times and remained a tie at the buzzer, putting the game into overtime. "Hustle Hard" finished victorious with a 75-74 win due to a standout performance by Mark Arana (Hustle Hard) who scored 13 points and had 7 assists. Mike Robbins (A-Town) led his team with 30 points and five assists.  "A-Town" now slides to 0-3 with the loss while "Hustle Hard" moves to 1-2 with sole possession of third place.
  • The "Sharp Shooters" challenged the undefeated "Hammers" in a regular season game late Thursday night. The "Hammers" pulled away quickly in the first half with superb three-point shooting by Ron Lee. Lee had four three-pointers in the first half and looked to get others involved in the second half with seven assists. The "Sharp Shooters" pulled within single digits late in the second half, but the early lead eventually proved to be too much. John Paul Abraham (Sharp Shooters) finished with 18 points and six assists while Tony David (Hammers) had a complete game with 16 points, 12 rebounds and five assists. The Hammers remain undefeated with a perfect 3-0 record while "The Sharp Shooters" drop to 1-2.

Thursday "D" League

  • "Rock Sugar" battled the "Blazers" early evening Thursday in a hard fought battle. The "Blazers" were looking to record its first win of the season while "Rock Sugar" was set on staying undefeated. "Rock Sugar" couldn't miss a shot in its first five minutes of play led by point guard Jabbar Alleyne. After opening up a 16 point lead at half, "Rock Sugar" kept the defense intensity high with contributions by Jordan Wilson and Daniel Kim. Tom Becht led the team in the second half with 11 points and five assists, and Ronnie Yadao also contributed with two key three-pointers. Jason Moffitt (Blazers) led the team with 10 points and five assists in a losing effort, 40-26.  The "Blazers" now slide to 0-3 and "Rock Sugar"remains the only undefeated team left with a record of 3-0. 
  • "The Dudes" were looking to get its second win of the season when they were matched up against "Smooth," another team with a 1-1 record. Unfortunately, due to an insufficient amount of players, "Smooth" had to forfeit, giving "The Dudes" an easy win. "Smooth" drops to 1-2 while "The Dudes" move up the standings with a 2-1 record.
  • "Old Time Magic" battled the undefeated "Our 6th Man" Thursday in a regular season game. "Our 6th Man" focused on defense in the beginning of the game, and as result, built a nine point lead in the first five minutes of the half. James White (Our 6th Man) lead the team with eight assists and 12 points and controlled the tempo for the entire first half. "Old Time Magic" came back in the second half and pulled within two points with two minutes remaining in the game. Mike Hingle (Old Time Magic) hit two clutch free throws in the closing seconds of the game to give his team the 52-50 victory. Todd Wolfson (Old Time Magic) led his team with three blocks and 13 rebounds, and Mike Hingle added five three pointers. "Old Time Magic" moves to 2-1 along with "Our 6th Man," who suffered its first defeat.
  • "Xavier" entered the game looking to record its first victory of the season against "Sony Delight." "Xavier grabbed an early lead with a strong play by Mike Corridori, who created second chance opportunities for his team with his numerous rebounds on the offensive end. In the second half, Kevin Martin (Xavier) and Sam Martin (Xavier) combined for four three pointers, helping to give their team a 56-45 victory. Brad Helgesen (Sony Delight) and Joe Devita (Sony Delight) combined for 28 points in a losing effort. "Sony Delight" slides to 1-2 with the loss and "Xavier" records its first win of the season, raising its record to 1-2.
