Fans Make Early Call to Pikey's for World Cup

Some 20 people arrive at the Agoura Hills pub by 7 a.m. Friday to catch the soccer tournament's opening game.

Large groups of people do not typically congregate at a bar at 7 a.m., but for some Agoura Hills residents, Friday's game one of the World Cup was better served with a pint of breakfast beer at Pikey's Pub.

The first game of the soccer tournament pitted Mexico against first-time host nation South Africa and ended in a 1-1 tie.

The World Cup is soccer's ultimate international championship and is held every four years. Former South Africa President Nelson Mandela had urged FIFA officials to grant the 2010 World Cup to his country as a gift for its 10th anniversary of democratic government.

After the match, several soccer fans went out to Pikey's parking lot to kick around a soccer ball.

"I'm glad Pikey's opened at six in the morning so we could sit here and enjoy the game," patron Paul Lazano said.
