Final Days to Register for the 28th Annual Dole Great Race of Agoura Hills

Registration is still available for all six races at running festival.

The 28th Annual Dole Great Race of Agoura Hills, a nationally recognized running event that brings more than 7000 running enthusiasts from around the world to Agoura Hills, is taking to the streets Saturday, March 23, 2013.

The Great Race offers 6 certified races and an award-winning post-race party.

The race's two half marathons, Northwestern Mutual Chesebro Half Marathon (mostly trail) and the Pacific Half Marathon (road race), were awarded “Best in the Nation” by Active.com, praised for their courses around and through scenic National Parks in the Santa Monica Mountains.

The Great Race also features a certified 10K and 5K with the Old Agoura 10K ranking among Runner's World Magazine’s top six 10Ks in the country.

Great Race recreational runs include the Kids Mile, one of the largest youth runs in California, and the Camp Kinneret Family Fun Run.

Voted “Best in L.A.”, the post race party features a grand buffet, live band, giant inflatables for kids, giveaways, and 50 vendor booths dedicated to sports and fitness.

You can register for the Dole Great Race at the Great Race Sports & Fitness Expo on Thursday, March 21, from 12-7 p.m., and Friday, March 22, from 12–6 p.m. at the Agoura Hills/ Calabasas Community Center, 27040 Malibu Hills Road in Agoura Hills. Cash is required to sign up for the races; for entry fees go to www.greatraceofagourahills.com. The Expo is free to the public and has an indoor rock wall, activities, entertainment, and vendor booths along with last minute race registration. For any race not sold out, runners may sign up the day of the race starting at 6 a.m. at Chumash Park.  

Event producers announced that this year runners will have real-time results and instant updates online and by phone. Families and friends of runners can also enjoy technological advancements through an Internet-based tracking website that allows them to follow runners by texts, Facebook and Twitter.

More than 400 community volunteers help produce the Great Race each year. Individuals, service organizations or students wanting community service hours can sign up to volunteer at www.greatraceofagourahills.com/volunteer or email jodi@greatraceofagoura.com.

For 28 years the Dole Great Race of Agoura Hills has served the community, donating over $1.5 M to Agoura Hills and Oak Park elementary schools and high schools’ athletic programs. It also generates fitness awareness programs at Agoura Hills and Oak Park elementary schools, promoting student nutrition and exercise.

It is unfortunate that this incident happened at our local schools. The crime is a result ofRead More ignorance and lack of education. All members of our community regardless of their race, creed, or religion should be respected. Perhaps our community needs to introspect and see why this occurred and how further events can be prevented.

I think for the most part, people are mentally drained. Few take the time to sit back relaxRead More anymore. Even when we do have a minute to ourselves, we're constantly bombarded with emails, text messages and status updates. If we unplugged ourselves from our devices, we might find the serenity we all so desperately need. Turn your phone off, take a hike. Find a big tree next to a creek and sit under the shade. Enjoy nature. Listen to the sound of the water, the birds and the breeze as it moves through the brush. When you get back to nature, if only for a short time, you'll leave with a clear mind and feel revitalized. You're right---technology was supposed to make our lives more simple. Instead, it fuels the attention deficit disorder as our brain becomes a hashtag with a constant barrage of (often useless) news and updates. Although I'm young, I'd give anything to go back to the days where calling someone often led to a wild goose chase of finding an available payphone and spare change to make the call.
