Local Trainer Discusses Safely Training Teenage Student-Athletes

Author and trainer Warren J. Potash will discuss and sign his new book They’re Not Boys: Safely Training the Adolescent Female Athlete on Thursday, April 19 at 7 PM at Barnes & Noble Thousand Oaks, 160 S. Westlake Blvd.

The good news: More and more young women are participating in team and individual sports. The bad news: More and more young women are suffering sports-related injuries. In fact, the rate of injury to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in young women is five to eight times higher than in young men of the same age.

In They’re Not Boys: Safely Training the Adolescent Female Athlete, author Warren J. Potash draws upon his experience as trainer to over 600 young female athletes to advocate for safe and appropriate training for young women who play sports.  Potash discusses the biomechanical, physiological, and hormonal factors that contribute to the increased rate of injury for teenage girls, and recommends age-appropriate and sport-specific training regimens to minimize the risk of those injuries.
