'Born to Live' One City, One Book

Agoura Hills will use the book "Born to Run" to celebrate the One City, One Book program titled “Born to Live” the week of March 27. The public is invited to related events that will include appearances by its best-selling author, Christopher McDougall.

Tuesday, March 27 at 3:30 pm.

Agoura Hills Library will present “Hatchet” by Gary Paulsen. The children’s program is highlighting the Newbery Honor-winning wilderness survival novel by Paulsen. A demonstration will feature owls and a nutritional “Build Your own Trail Mix”. The library is located at 29901 Ladyface Court in Agoura Hills.

 Wednesday, March 28 at 6:00 pm

“Fun & Run” with Christopher McDougall. Hosted and sponsored by Future Track and Saucony Shoes, the event invites anyone over 21 to join author Christopher McDougall in a relaxed 3.5 mile run that will end at The Lab Brewing Company. The run begins at Future Track, located at 30125 Agoura Road in Agoura Hills, and returns to The Lab Brewing Company at 30105 Agoura Road. The first 100 registered participants will receive a free beverage; to be eligible, register with Future Track by calling (818) 991-4786.

Thursday, March 29 at 6:00 pm

“Born to Run” author Christopher McDougall will be discussing his book followed by a Q&A session and book signing at Agoura Hills City Hall – Community Room located at 30001 Ladyface Court in Agoura Hills.

Saturday, March 31 at 2:00 pm

Family-friendly guided hike led by the National Park Service in Chesboro/Palo Comado Canyons. Wear hiking shoes and bring water. Meet at the trailhead (5792 Cheseboro Rd.) in Agoura Hills.

It is unfortunate that this incident happened at our local schools. The crime is a result ofRead More ignorance and lack of education. All members of our community regardless of their race, creed, or religion should be respected. Perhaps our community needs to introspect and see why this occurred and how further events can be prevented.

I think for the most part, people are mentally drained. Few take the time to sit back relaxRead More anymore. Even when we do have a minute to ourselves, we're constantly bombarded with emails, text messages and status updates. If we unplugged ourselves from our devices, we might find the serenity we all so desperately need. Turn your phone off, take a hike. Find a big tree next to a creek and sit under the shade. Enjoy nature. Listen to the sound of the water, the birds and the breeze as it moves through the brush. When you get back to nature, if only for a short time, you'll leave with a clear mind and feel revitalized. You're right---technology was supposed to make our lives more simple. Instead, it fuels the attention deficit disorder as our brain becomes a hashtag with a constant barrage of (often useless) news and updates. Although I'm young, I'd give anything to go back to the days where calling someone often led to a wild goose chase of finding an available payphone and spare change to make the call.
