Agoura Student Receives Top Baseball Honors

Infielder Tyler Cohen, an Agoura High School senior, has been selected the Marmonte League player of the year and Ventura County player of the year.

Tyler Cohen, an infielder on the Charger baseball team, has been selected as the Marmonte League player of the year and the Ventura County player of the year.

"It's a great honor considering the caliber of players out there," said the high school senior.

Cohen's coach, Michael Cordero, said he'd always thought that Cohen was a highly underrated player.

"He didn't really shine until his sophomore year," said Cordero. "But I knew he was a diamond in the rough when I began to coach him."

Cohen credits his coach for bringing out his talents.

"He really flipped the program for all of us," Cohen said. "He not only pushed us physically but mentally and brought out the best in all of us."

Cordero recalls selecting Cohen over an established senior player to play shortstop back in 2011.

"I always had my eye on him," Cordero said. "He's very competitive."

Cohen said his only regret is that his team didn't win this year's CIF Championship.

"We played a great game," he said. "But we didn't have enough hits this time."

Cohen has received a scholarship to Loyola Marymount University where he will continue to pursue his dream of playing professional baseball.

In the meantime, he plans to continue to practice four to five hours a day after school and over the summer.
