New Parking Rules for AHS During Construction

The work on Agoura High's new performing arts center will displace some on-campus parking and redirect traffic flow this school year.

With the construction of a 650-seat performing arts center, student drop-off and parking for both Agoura High and Indian Hills Continuation High School will change this academic year. A detailed parking and traffic plan was provided to students and parents prior to the start of school:

  • A new traffic flow pattern for the half circle for morning drop off and afternoon pick up calls for no parking along the curb of the half circle from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and again from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • During afternoon pick up, there will be no left turn into the half circle if you are heading east on Driver Avenue, coming from the direction of Chumash Park, and no parking along the south side of Driver Avenue, opposite the main circle, between 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. However, parents are allowed to use empty parking spots in the student lot after 1:30 p.m.
  • Student parking will enter the main entrance in front of the gym for the upper lot and the new driveway on Driver Avenue for the lower lot. Parking on Thousand Oaks Boulevard is first come, first served.
  • Indian Hills will enter the main entrance in front of the gym and still have access to drive up to the campus.
  • Additional parking has been provided on the outdoor basketball courts next to Indian Hills High School. These parking spaces are different than the regular permits sold to juniors and seniors, and will be assigned by special permit and be available after the start of school.
  • Construction traffic uses their own entrance and exit on Driver Road into the green fenced area.

In an Aug. 24 message to Charger parents and students, principal Larry Misel warned of the posted parking restrictions around the high school after several cars were ticketed for illegal parking during the registration period for seniors.

"Final preparation for the beginning of school is taking shape as contractors complete parking lots and signage that will hopefully reduce congestion and parking problems," Misel said.

It is estimated that the 100-seat "black box" theatre will take about two years to complete. Construction began in June.

"Those of you who have had an opportunity to either visit or drive by the school have seen the construction teams working full speed to complete the major earthwork prior to the return of our students," said Misel in an Aug. 17 message to students and parents. "As with any project of this size, there will be disruptions to parking and traffic as the project progresses over the next 24 months."

Las Virgenes Unified officials said that student safety will not be jeopardized by the construction and that all work will be coordinated so as not to interfere with the instructional program. Suggestions or questions can be sent to TeamConcept at stjohn@lvusd.org or 818-889-1910.

Stay tuned for a follow-up on this story when Patch gets some feedback from students and parents about the new parking rules.
