Agoura's Own Runway Project

Creative student designers showed off their fashion savvy at the 5th annual Agoura High School Fashion Show.

Showing off the latest student creations, fashion models strutted their stuff down the runway in the “G” building Friday night at the school’s 5th annual Agoura High School Fashion Show. The event was presented by the school’s Top Fashion Club under the supervision of club adviser and high school teacher Kim Speth.

Each of the 11 designers created a five-piece collection that embodied a chosen theme, ranging from fairytales to nature, said Speth. There was even a representation of the Las Vegas strip, entitled “Vegas,” created by student Lindsey Alpert.

All of the collections are completed outside of school and none of the students receive any class credit, said Speth.  “The designers participate in the show simply because they love fashion design,” she said.

The two designers that received the most attention, in terms of outside-the-box creativity, were Kyla Carter and her whimsical and engaging collection, "Halloween Circus," which clearly demonstrated her love for both the holiday and the circus; and Nicki Zisman's "Lady Gaga," which the paid homage to the singer's cutting edge sense of style and fashion as an art form.

Special guest judges Gayle Bakshi, from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, and fellow alumni Allison Fleming and Brianna Weinstein were on hand to offer positive comments and encouragement to each of the student designers.  After the viewing, guests were invited to fill out ballots to determine the top two prize-winning collections.

The big winners of the evening were Stephanie Minas’ "Getty Architecture/Black Swan, which captured the Best of Show award, and "Morgan Thornsley's collection, entitled "Mysterious Chic & Flirty," which took the Most Likely to be Seen in a Store award.

Following the main show, the audience was treated to a showing of the "reconstruction projects" of Speth's Clothing II class.  Their work was imaginative in its own right, as students were challenged to create an outfit out of a simple men's dress shirt purchased from Good Will.
