Crooked Welcome

Why is the Agoura Hills sign on the 101 Freeway askew?

For motorists heading north on the 101 Freeway near the Lost Hills exit, the first indication that our fair city is near is a sign that reads "Agoura Hills Next 4 Exits." But many drivers are likely to miss the greeting, which tilts precariously downward.

When we asked Ramiro Adeva, Agoura Hills' city engineer, about it he couldn't say why the sign was slanted, but he promptly put in a maintenance request with the California Department of Transportation.

Caltrans, which manages more than 50,000 miles of the state's freeways and the accompanying signage, has cut back to a four-day week so it may take a while to get a crew out to set our sign straight, Adeva said.
