'Pet Lover's License Plate' Orders Still Open

A bill signed by Gov. Jerry Brown will give pet owners and supporters another year to gather the requisite number of orders for the "California Pet Lover's License Plate."

Californians have another year to order the "California Pet Lover's License Plate," which will help fund spay and neuter program, thanks to a bill by Assemblyman Jose Solorio, D-Anaheim, that Gov. Jerry Brown signed last week.

"It's a great idea," said Brown, who was accompanied by the state's first dog, Sutter, and actor Pierce Brosnan on his visit to a West Los Angeles pet store Wednesday. "It's not government, it's not bureaucracy. It's not Sacramento."

The plates will not be distributed until 7,500 are ordered. There were 4,620 plates ordered as of Tuesday, according to the Department of Motor Vehicles.

The plates cost $50 initially and have a $40 annual renewal fee. A personalized plate costs $98, with a $78 annual renewal fee.

Approximately $32.68 of each $50 paid per plate order goes into the spay/neuter fund and the other $17.32 to the Department of Motor Vehicles for processing, according to the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Brosnan, who created the artwork on the plate, depicting a sunglass-wearing cat on the head of a dog, told television station ABC 7 that the plate program "will enable people who couldn't necessarily afford to neuter their dog or their cat (to) take them to a shelter (and) have them neutered so they don't have unwanted babies."

Solorio, who joined Brown and Brosnan at the event promoting the plates said "pet owners want to do the right thing, but spay/neuter surgeries average $95 per procedure. The annual proceeds from the plate will give city and county animal shelters the opportunity to bring those costs down to more affordable levels, or even be free. Ultimately, this bill will save hundreds of thousands of pet lives in California."

The information we received from the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's station was that a mentally illRead More patient was removed from the bus Sunday night. No one was harmed, officials said.

Either way it is wrong and uses the race card as a "despicable stunt"

Not a hate crime at all. Just a very stupid kid trying to manipulate the system so he could beRead More granted a athletic transfer. One of the kids on the "hit list" was the perp. Really despicable stunt.

It is unfortunate that this incident happened at our local schools. The crime is a result ofRead More ignorance and lack of education. All members of our community regardless of their race, creed, or religion should be respected. Perhaps our community needs to introspect and see why this occurred and how further events can be prevented.

Thanks for your great perspective on this issue. We should all unplug once in awhile.

I think for the most part, people are mentally drained. Few take the time to sit back relaxRead More anymore. Even when we do have a minute to ourselves, we're constantly bombarded with emails, text messages and status updates. If we unplugged ourselves from our devices, we might find the serenity we all so desperately need. Turn your phone off, take a hike. Find a big tree next to a creek and sit under the shade. Enjoy nature. Listen to the sound of the water, the birds and the breeze as it moves through the brush. When you get back to nature, if only for a short time, you'll leave with a clear mind and feel revitalized. You're right---technology was supposed to make our lives more simple. Instead, it fuels the attention deficit disorder as our brain becomes a hashtag with a constant barrage of (often useless) news and updates. Although I'm young, I'd give anything to go back to the days where calling someone often led to a wild goose chase of finding an available payphone and spare change to make the call.

If you can't talk politics with friends without being able to agree to disagree or even end upRead More losing them as friends then they were not the "friends" you thought they were anyway.

It's not about moving forward, it's about saving your breath! That's the whole problem; too muchRead More talk and not enough action! You gonna eat that fish or just hold it up in the air?

then again, if you only speak with people who agree with you, how do you ever move forward? aren'tRead More you just "spinning your wheels" staying in the same spot never moving forward?
