New and Familiar Faces in Agoura Hills Council Race

An educator and a doctor are among four candidates vying for two seats: those of incumbent John M. Edelston, who is up for re-election, and Mayor Pro Tem Dan Kuperberg, who is vacating his post.

Four candidates are vying for two seats on the Agoura Hills City Council in the November general election—one left vacant by Mayor Pro Tem Dan Kuperberg, who has decided not to seek re-election after 16 years on the council; the other held by incumbent John M. Edelston, who is running for re-election.

The four candidates, who will appear on the ballot in the following order, are: Illece Buckley Weber, John M. Edelston, Sue Lepisto and Meril S. Platzer. (The order of names was decided via a random drawing by the secretary of state.) Here are their profiles:

  • Illece Buckley Weber, an attorney and Agoura Hills planning commissioner for the past five years, boasts an impressive list of endorsements, including Mayor Harry Schwarz and four previous mayors, three former planning commissioners and a long list of other community leaders, according to her campaign's website.
  • John M. Edelston, an incumbent, was elected to the City Council in 2003 and served as mayor during 2007-08. He is currently the president of HealthPro Associates and holds an MBA in finance and strategic planning from Pepperdine University, as well as bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UCLA.
  • Sue Lepisto is a school programs consultant and retired high school principal. She is currently vice chair of the interscholastic athletic committee for the Los Angeles Unified School District, and holds other part-time positions consulting and advising for the district. She also has served for eight years on the Agoura Hills Community Services Advisory Committee.
  • Meril S. Platzer is a practicing neurologist with an office in Woodland Hills. Her interests include advisory and advocacy work for her patients on the federal and state levels, specializing in Alzheimer’s disease. She hopes to change attitudes and laws toward patients and caretakers.
