More 'Happy Days' In Store for Reyes Adobe Days

At a press conference on Tuesday, Mayor Harry Schwarz announced plans for the 7th annual Reyes Adobe Days, being held September 30-October 3.

Some changes are in store for this year's Reyes Adobe Days (RAD). The three-day fall festival, celebrating the Agoura Hills community through history, culture, and the arts, will see a brand new RAD run and will be part of a larger, regional museum event celebrating culture of the 20th century.

Agoura Mayor Harry Schwarz officially announced plans for the 7th annual fall festival at the on Tuesday. "This is one of those rare events to which you can bring the entire family...a wonderful experience for family bonding," Schwarz said in his introduction.

Schwarz said he expects over 14,000 people to attend the festivities.

As previously , this year's grand marshal will be actor and longtime Agoura resident Don Most, best known for his portrayal of 'Ralph Malph' in the hit television sitcom Happy Days, Schwarz said. Most has been living in Agoura Hills with his family since 1989, he said.

"Having been a resident for so long...and being asked to be grand marshal is such an honor," Most told Patch. "I'm really looking forward to it and being able to share in the community spirit."

In addition to leading the traditional mile-long RAD parade, which will begin at and travel down Reyes Adobe Rd. to the historical site, Most will attend the September 30th Night at the Adobe art opening and reception, as well as attend many of the weekend's festivities.

"I truly appreciate that he'll be involved this year. It's an honor to have him," said Schwarz of Most's participation.

The theme of this year's festival is "ART 91301 Then and Now," part of the larger Pacific Standard Time (PST), a regional museum event, sponsored by the Getty Foundation and Research Institute, that celebrates California culture, specifically the art of the 1940's through the 1980's, said Schwarz.

"In conjunction with Pacific Standard Time, Art 91301 Then and Now will tell the story of local art and culture through the decades, reflecting Los Angeles' many unique art movements," said Amy Brink, community services director, in a press release.

The featured artist for this year's festival is Plein Air water-colorist Pong Apinyavat, whose paintings can be found in many private collections and galleries throughout the U.S., Asia and Europe. Apinyavat will be giving live demonstrations throughout the weekend, and many of his paintings will be for sale at the gallery.

Schwarz also announced that, instead of the RAD 5K that has been run in previous years, there will be a RAD 10K instead. Once again being organized by Danny Greenberg, this year's run, which will be held on October 1 at 8 a.m., will begin in front of Yerba Buena Elementary School, on the north end of Reyes Adobe Rd., pass the Adobe, run along the El Camino Real and finish at Paramount Ranch. According to Greenberg, 300 participants have already signed up.

"After the race, we will bus the runners back to the Adobe where they can partake in the pancake breakfast," said Greenberg. In addition, this years race winners will get to ride in the parade.

Because of the length of the race, several road closures will be in place over that weekend. The largest closure will be the right lane of Reyes Adobe Rd. from Thousand Oaks Blvd. to Passageway Place, starting the night of Sept. 29. Other closure times and locations will be available on the city's web site closer to the event.

The title sponsor this year is , a dog daycare and overnight 'camp,' located in Agoura Hills. "Sponsoring Reyes Adobe Days is a wonderful way of giving back to the community," said Paul Berkovitz, the facility's director. "We look forward to participating."

Once again, this year's event promises free museum tours, hands-on Rancho-era activities for the kids, historical demonstrations, live music, pony rides, a petting zoo, a beer garden (presented by Ladyface Alehouse & Brasserie), a farmer's market, vendors and food trucks.
