Bogey and Bergman Entertain at the Adobe

Agoura residents gather under the stars at Reyes Adobe Park Saturday night to watch the classic film 'Casablanca.'

Couples, families and friends began setting up chairs and laying out picnic blankets in the courtyard of Reyes Adobe Historical Site & Park at about 7 p.m. Saturday to watch Casablanca, the classic love story about a man torn between love and virtue, starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman.

“We show family movies at Reyes Adobe Park every summer, but this is our first time showing a classic film aimed at adults,” said Xochitl Castillo, community services coordinator.

The movie was free to the public, but because the film was shown on the courtyard of the Adobe rather than the lawn, space was limited and reservations were required. “We had about 60 people RSVP,” said Ellen Wohl, a Reyes Adobe docent who checked in movie-goers along with fellow docent Nina Olander.

“We’ve been coming to the family movies in the park for many years. Casablanca is one of my top five favorite movies, so I had to come out for this,” said Agoura resident Bill Brendan, who brought his daughter Rebecca with him to watch the film.

Joanne Calhoun has lived in Agoura Hills since 1973 and often attends community events. “I’ve never seen Casablanca in its entirety, so I thought it would be a fun thing for my friend Bettye and me to do.”

Thousand Oaks residents Kelly and Justin Alvarez brought along a picnic dinner in celebration of Justin’s birthday and as a date night away from six of their seven children. Peter, 6 months old and the newest addition to their family, came along on the date with them. “I’m always searching for fun things for the family to do for free,” said Kelly. “When I saw this I thought it would be a great date night and way for Justin and me to celebrate his birthday without most of the kids. We figured if Peter gets fussy one of us can walk with him until he falls asleep.”

John Grogg, 28, was also celebrating his birthday with his wife and six of their friends. His wife baked cupcakes with cream cheese frosting and confetti, all made from scratch to commemorate the occasion.

At 8:30 p.m. when the late summer sun finally set and the three-quarter moon rose in the night sky, the movie began, and Agoura residents settled in for a romantic trip into the past.
