Two Killed in Car Crash

The driver will face DUI charges, officers say.

Two people were killed and two others injured, including the driver, after a suspected DUI-related car crash on Monday.

California Highway Patrol officers say the crash occurred at 11:20 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 9, on Potrero Road east of Hidden Valley Road.

The 2005 Infiniti was traveling eastbound “we think at a high rate of speed due to the damage to the vehicle involved,” according to Public Information Officer Miguel Duarte of the Moorpark California Highway Patrol office.

The crash occurred when the driver  "failed to negotiate a left curve in the roadway and traveled onto the south dirt shoulder. The Infiniti struck multiple construction equipment, including a large John Deere Backhoe," Duarte said.

While the names of the two deceased passengers have not yet been released pending notification of next of kin, they have been identified as a 26-year-old male from Newbury Park and a 23-year-old female from Thousand Oaks.

Duarte said a third victim, a 21-year-old female from Newbury Park, suffered “moderate injuries” and was hospitalized at Los Robles Medical Center.

The driver, Collin Ronald Powell, sustained minor injuries and will face, at a minimum, felony DUI charges, according to Duarte.

"We’d like to remind people to please don’t drink and drive, and designate a sober driver,” Duarte said. "Somebody who has absolutely had nothing to drink.  That’s obviously our number one goal in these cases here to reduce the DUI-related incidents."

Anyone who has information or may have witnessed the crash is urged to call the Moorpark California Highway Patrol office at (805)553-0800.
