Crash on 101 Believed to Be Rain-Related

Heavy rainfall considered a factor in traffic accident on 101 Freeway near Kanan Road.

Update: 4:15 p.m.

According to Officer Adam Smith of the California Highway Patrol, West Valley, the driver of the Mercedes lost control for some "unknown reason," hit the white van and continued out of control until it slipped down the embankment and hit a fence.

"This is a good time to remind people that we need to adjust our speed according to weather conditions, regardless of what the legal speed limit is," said Smith, though he couldn't confirm that rain was the definitive cause of the accident.

Two vehicles—a Ford Aerostar and a Mercedes Benz sedan—were involved in the incident, which occurred at about 11:30 a.m., said Capt. Ed Saldibar of county Fire Station 89. It was unknown how the Ford van was involved.

The woman was driving the Mercedes when it slid off the road and into a ditch, Saldibar said.

"The rain was definitely a factor," Saldibar said.
