Police Aim to Keep Grinch out of Agoura Hills This Holiday

Random home security checks are available to residents on vacation.

During the winter break, my family will be on staycation, but if you are one of the lucky ones leaving town for the holidays and are worried about leaving your home unprotected, you will be happy to know that the  deputies are here to help.

They currently offer a service whereby a deputy or volunteer patrol will check homes for broken windows, open doors or other suspicious activities of residents on vacation. Sometimes, volunteers will pick up newspapers and mail collecting in front of the house.

All you need to do is call the with information about the departure and return of the trip, said Dep. Shawn Brownell of the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station.

Whether you call for the drive-by service or not, Brownell recommends certain precautions to protect your home against potential break-ins while away.

Get an automatic timer for home interior lights. The home should look occupied to deter criminals, Brownell said.

Ask a friend or neighbor to watch your home, park in the driveway from time to time, and pick up newspapers and collect the mail. "If it piles up, it is a sure sign that you are gone," Brownell said.

Lastly, make sure to take a holiday inventory. Brownell recommends taking photos or making videos of items, as well as listing descriptions and serial numbers.

"If your home is burglarized, having a detailed inventory can help identify stolen items and make insurance claims easier to file," he said.

Ensure a safe and merry Christmas.
