Kelly's Situation is Urgent

Kelly is a beautiful German wirehaired pointer mix. He may be 8 years old, but is still vey playful and acts like a puppy. He is a smart, lively, energetic boy that is vey trainable. He is healthy and weighs about 50 to 60 lbs. He has many years ahead of him and needs to get out of the shelter as soon as possible. His situation is urgent. He has been at the shelter longer than any other dog.

Kelly has an unfortunate history due to an underserved series of events.

A woman that saw him at an event first adopted him. She took him home and he got along splendidly with the family for six years, but it seems he had too much energy for her to handle so she brought him to the Agoura shelter.

Someone that had a huge horse ranch then adopted him, but he had never previously been with horses and didn’t do well with them. Kelly was returned to the shelter because of this.

On his third adoption an older teen came to meet him and decided to take Kelly home. She surprised her parents with him whom it is thought were not happy to have him. He was there for a short time because the girl was moving and she couldn’t take him and he couldn’t stay with her parents.

You can guess what happened next.

Well six months later Kelly is still waiting for his forever home.

It seems that none of his owners did any research on his breed to know that he is high energy. Instead one of his owners gave him “doggie downers” rather than satisfy his liveliness with exercise and training.

He has been set up for failure a few times. Not intentionally, but he really needs someone with experience and patience to understand him and to train him.

Here are some things you should know about Kelly:

·      He loves to run, play, fetch some toys and run some more.

·      He loves to play in the water.

·      He thrives on vigorous exercise.

·      He is housebroken.

·      He will do well with older children.

He did live with two small dogs in his first home and a cat and did great. Since then he has been in a kennel environment that can add a great amount of stress. When he meets a new dog he can get overly excited and that can be overwhelming. He might be best as an only pet.

His friends at the shelter say that he walks the grounds nicely and that he doesn’t seem to care about the dogs in the play yard when walking by them. He does pull which can be corrected with proper training, but mostly he is just happy to be out on a walk, enjoying being out of his kennel and sniffing everything around him.

He can be a little stubborn, but with focus and consistency he can be trained to do just about anything.

Kelly really needs to find a home with someone that would devote the time to train him and help him with his socialization skills and not give up on him. His time is running out. He needs to be given a chance to be loved and be part of a family. If you are a devoted adopter with experience with high-energy breeds you can transform him into the dog he was meant to be.
