Wonderful Watermelon

Raise a glass to the wonderful watermelon.

Friday was National Watermelon Day!

Watermelon is the quintessential summertime treat. It’s synonymous with swim parties, picnics and lazy afternoons.

There are lots of ways to serve up watermelon. One can make melon balls, Slushies, and slices. You can even carve one into a cute little basket or "baby carriage" as a vessel for other fruit. There is no end to the creative ways you can serve watermelon.

When I lived in Arizona, one of my favorite days of the week was Watermelon Wednesday at a local bar. The bartender was a gifted man who made the world’s best watermelon shots. They were a $1 a piece and very drinkable. It was altogether a very pleasant way to spend an afternoon.

Another favorite, was the “drunken watermelon.” Some industrious fraternity boy had figured out that if a cold watermelon was good, a watermelon infused with vodka was even better!

This is not fare for children, so if you made a drunken watermelon, be sure that it’s at the adult’s table only. Give yourself a few days to prepare the watermelon ahead of time.

Drunken Watermelon

Ingredients:

  • Watermelon (personal size is fun, but you can use a bigger size)
  • Sharp Knife
  • Small Bottle of Vodka

Directions:

Cut a one inch plug from the watermelon. Reserve. A small amount at a time, pour vodka into the opening. Refrigerate between pours.  Walk away if you have to and come back at a later time.  Slowly over the course of a couple hours, continue to pour the contents of the vodka bottle into the watermelon.

Refrigerate and serve cold.

The information we received from the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's station was that a mentally illRead More patient was removed from the bus Sunday night. No one was harmed, officials said.

Either way it is wrong and uses the race card as a "despicable stunt"

Not a hate crime at all. Just a very stupid kid trying to manipulate the system so he could beRead More granted a athletic transfer. One of the kids on the "hit list" was the perp. Really despicable stunt.

It is unfortunate that this incident happened at our local schools. The crime is a result ofRead More ignorance and lack of education. All members of our community regardless of their race, creed, or religion should be respected. Perhaps our community needs to introspect and see why this occurred and how further events can be prevented.

Thanks for your great perspective on this issue. We should all unplug once in awhile.

I think for the most part, people are mentally drained. Few take the time to sit back relaxRead More anymore. Even when we do have a minute to ourselves, we're constantly bombarded with emails, text messages and status updates. If we unplugged ourselves from our devices, we might find the serenity we all so desperately need. Turn your phone off, take a hike. Find a big tree next to a creek and sit under the shade. Enjoy nature. Listen to the sound of the water, the birds and the breeze as it moves through the brush. When you get back to nature, if only for a short time, you'll leave with a clear mind and feel revitalized. You're right---technology was supposed to make our lives more simple. Instead, it fuels the attention deficit disorder as our brain becomes a hashtag with a constant barrage of (often useless) news and updates. Although I'm young, I'd give anything to go back to the days where calling someone often led to a wild goose chase of finding an available payphone and spare change to make the call.

If you can't talk politics with friends without being able to agree to disagree or even end upRead More losing them as friends then they were not the "friends" you thought they were anyway.

It's not about moving forward, it's about saving your breath! That's the whole problem; too muchRead More talk and not enough action! You gonna eat that fish or just hold it up in the air?
Dave April 7, 2013 at 07:29 am
then again, if you only speak with people who agree with you, how do you ever move forward? aren'tRead More you just "spinning your wheels" staying in the same spot never moving forward?
