When the weather starts to get warm and sunny (um, anytime now) my girlfriends and I like to escape the suburban mommy doldrums and head 12 minutes south to the Malibu Wines tasting room, located just off of Kanan at 31740 Mulholland Highway.
There is a fabulous tasting bar where the very knowledgeable and friendly sommeliers will be happy to pour one of three flights for you–the Saddlerock Ranch flight ($10) featuring one white and three reds, the Semler Estate Flight ($12) featuring one white, one rose, and two reds, and the Cab Flight ($12). Semler wines are the estate-grown wines from the vineyards in Malibu and Saddlerock wines are grapes sourced from the central coast of California.
Become a member of the Malibu Winery and enjoy a tasting for yourself and a friend for free anytime you like.
My girlfriends and I will usually do a tasting and then purchase a bottle of wine to enjoy at one of the umbrella-shaded stone tables set upon an old wine barrel. Of course, the afternoon wouldn’t be complete without a picnic basket full of cheese, tapenade, a fresh baguette, and maybe a little bit of dark chocolate thrown in. My friends and I have been known to linger for hours over plentiful small bites and a bottle (or two) of the winery’s wonderful offerings.
If you decide to escape with the one you love instead a gaggle of girlfriends, the picnic grounds also serve as a wonderfully romantic spot for an afternoon date with your sweetheart.
When you do escape to this fantastic local haven be sure to escape kid-free. This Great Escape is for adults only–no one under the age of 21 is allowed on the premises.
The tasting room is open daily from 11-6 with extended hours Thursday-Saturday in the summer. There is often live music on weekends. Check the calendar page on their website for details.
