Blog: LA Planning to Vote on Plans for Original Malibou Lake Clubhouse Site

The owners of original Malibou Lake Clubhouse sight seek approval to build two single family homes.

Los Angeles Planning Commission to Vote on Plans to Develop Original Malibou Lake Clubhouse Site

To the protesters who would like to see the lot remain vacant, Clark Cable couldn't have said it better, "Frankly my neighbors in Malibou Lakeside, I don't give a damn."

Gable, Jimmy Cagney, Carole Lombard and other Hollywood types had been known to play a round of poker at the old clubhouse, a lodge style structure with 24 boarding rooms. The site is a popular dog walking park ever since the clubhouse burnt down in 1935.

The owners of the 5-acre site, consisting of two legal parcels on Seminole and Crags Drives, have bent over backwards to appeal to the protesters, offering to reserve a portion of the lot as a park. The zoning of the site is Resort and Recreational. It would be easier for the owners to obtain a permit for a convention center or a rodeo facility than to obtain the Conditional Use Permit to build the two single family homes that they are proposing.

Don Haskin, one of the owners of the site, hopes that the community will see the advantages of building two custom homes versus a commercial use that the zoning would allow. Haskin sees the potential for a beautiful equestrian facility on the site, including a riding arena. A trail-head into Malibu Creek State park is just a block away at the end of Crags Dr.

A group of neighbors offered to buy at least one of the two parcels rather than allow any type of construction. A price that would be acceptable to the owner has not been determined.

The Los Angeles County Regional Planning Commission is scheduled to vote on the matter at their regular session on Feb. 12 at the County offices downtown.  The only variance requested is to cut down one of more than 50 oaks on the property.

The hearing for this proposed development is Wednesday, Feb. 13th. My neighbors and I will once again be downtown to dissuade Regional Planning from issuing a C.U.P. for a zoning variance which would allow for two 6000 sq. ft. homes in the middle of our community. We have fought the development of this property for 26 years. We are not stopping now. This project in its current iteration is not in keeping with the rural and natural composition of Malibu Lake and Lakeside. If we wanted to live next to a property such as the ones proposed, we would all be in North Ranch now. Malibu Lake and Lakeside are very special places to live, like few others in our area.

Thanks Susan for the correction on the hearing date. Is it the size of the homes that is objectionable? I personally think there is as much demand and value for homes in the 4500-5000 sqft price range, especially with horse facilities. Or would any development at all be objectionable? The lots are larger than average for Crags. Wouldn't that make a larger than average home less conspicuous than if it were on your lot? For that matter, if the lot were divided such that each lot size were as small as the neighboring lots, wouldn't the resulting 15 or more homes built on 15 or more lots be worse than just two homes? I am trying to understand your argument. Thanks much!

The picture in this article is the Malibou Lake Mountain Club. It is NOT the site that is proposed for current development. The Old Clubhouse property on Crags Drive did not have 24 boarding rooms. The writer of this article has information that is incorrect. The Clubhouse that was on the property did not burn down, it was demolished by the current owners and the demolition debris was loaded into the pool, also on the property. The property is zoned recreational and always has been. The developer is trying to change recreational zoning that has been in existence for over a 100 yrs. so that he can build 12,000 square feet, distributed between two homes. Pesonally, I would prefer an equestrian center. That would be in keeping with the horse property in Malibu Lakeside where this property is. For the record, the portion the developer offered to the "protestors" preferably called neighbors - was the size of a tarp!!!! I would also like to point out that the homes proposed look very similar to Hampton Inns - so inappropriate for the area. The neighbors are simply trying to keep building in accordance with the rustic area of the community and the North Area Plan.

Was there ANOTHER clubhouse that burnt in the 1930's?
Quoted from the Malibou Lake Mountain Club website, http://www.maliboulake.com/contact/history.html : Our original rustic clubhouse was finished in 1924, but burned to the ground in 1936. This clubhouse had 24 bedrooms for visiting members, a 55’x 75’ lounge, a 40’x 60’ dining room, a stage and locker rooms. The photo was not submitted by the writer - who by the way, has no stake in the outcome of the hearing.

LA Planners unanimously approved the project on Wednesday. According to Don Haskin, it was Los Angeles County Fire Department that demolished the old clubhouse and sent the owners a bil for $27,000. Was anyone around at the time to corroborate or refute this information? Bloggers?
