Blog Post: Talking Architect

Keep in mind you don't need a master's degree in architecture to make sure your message is getting through in the conversation and your style ends up in the final project.

How well you and the your architect learn to speak one another’s language determines how much of “you” and not the architect ends up in the final project.

Keep in mind you don’t need a master’s degree in architecture to make sure your message is getting through in the conversation. The key is to have a mutual understanding before moving on to the next phase.

Preliminary Design.  Be sure to study the relationships between spaces and design. In this stage you’re looking at the whole project, not the details. So communicate your likes and dislikes about the flow of the home.

Get into Another Dimension. Don’t just look at 2D drawings! Get into the third dimension so you can feel the character of the spaces inside and out. Architects are accustomed to thinking in 3D but looking at 2D, so don’t bother getting in their mind, get it on paper.

Stop the “Archi-talk.” Don’t let the jargon confuse or intimate you. Stop the architect in mid-sentence if he or she is talking over your head and ask for layman terms. If you want to brush up on your architect terms get Architecture for Dummies.

Say it With Photos. It sounds cliché but “pictures are worth a thousand words,” so give the architect an earful with photos that best describe what you’re looking for. Home design magazines, websites, and books are plentiful so start creating idea files as examples of what you can’t put into words.
