Blog Post: The New Wave in the Fitness Industry

What is functional training and why will it help you reach your goal? Making your workout routines more functional will help you become much more productive and efficient with your workouts.

A new term coming out in the fitness industry is functional training. What is functional training and how can it benefit you? Whenever I talk about this term, functional training, people always ask what does that mean?

Functional training generally targets more than one muscle group. By recruiting multiple muscle groups all at the same time, you are working synergistically, making your workouts much more productive. Functional training emerged from the sports conditioning world, and the specific training athletes do to prepare and condition for their particular sport.

You may be asking yourself, "why would I workout this way, I am not a professional athlete or involved in sports anymore?" Functional exercises benefit your body in so many ways outside of sports. I consider it to be "training for everyday life".

Traditional "weight lifting" generally targets one muscle for each exercise. Weight lifting machines have a preset motion built in making each movement very controlled which requires your stabilizer muscles NOT to work very hard. Functional exercises allow you to work in all planes of motion, hitting different angles of the muscles. This requires your stabilizer muscles to work and work hard.

The many benefits functional exercises have are building "inner strength", endurance, improve balance, improve range of motion, improved coordination and stability and they burn lots of calories. By adding in functional exercises to your workout routines you will become much more productive and effective getting you the results you want. You will start to move with more ease and less effort.
