Understanding Reiki: Benefits for Cancer Patients and Caregivers

Reiki is a gentle therapeutic practice originating in Japan. It is facilitated through light touch and is a non-invasive addition to most medical treatments. Reiki can assist in easing the stress and discomfort associated with cancer by improving relaxation, helping to relieve side effects, and promoting the body's own innate ability to rejuvenate. Learn what Reiki is and have an opportunity to experience Reiki energy first-hand.


Melissa Remotti is a certified Usui & Karuna Reiki Master Teacher and owner of Rejuvenate Reiki. She began using Reiki energy more than 15 years ago and is passionate about sharing Reiki both as a practitioner and facilitator. Claire Staffa is a certified Usui Reiki Master. An energy worker for over 25 years, she works at Mind Body Spirit Center in Westlake Village where she gives Reiki treatments as part of their integrative medicine programs. Both practitioners have worked extensively with cancer patients and their caregivers as Reiki Clinical Care Extender Volunteers in the Cancer Center at St. John’s Regional Medical Center and through their respective private practices. I think for the most part, people are mentally drained. Few take the time to sit back relaxRead More anymore. Even when we do have a minute to ourselves, we're constantly bombarded with emails, text messages and status updates. If we unplugged ourselves from our devices, we might find the serenity we all so desperately need. Turn your phone off, take a hike. Find a big tree next to a creek and sit under the shade. Enjoy nature. Listen to the sound of the water, the birds and the breeze as it moves through the brush. When you get back to nature, if only for a short time, you'll leave with a clear mind and feel revitalized. You're right---technology was supposed to make our lives more simple. Instead, it fuels the attention deficit disorder as our brain becomes a hashtag with a constant barrage of (often useless) news and updates. Although I'm young, I'd give anything to go back to the days where calling someone often led to a wild goose chase of finding an available payphone and spare change to make the call.
