State Senator Throws Hat into House Race

Sen. Ted Lieu is the third of who knows how many to run for the seat being left by the retiring Rep. Henry Waxman.

Sen. Ted Lieu announced his candidacy for the 33rd Congressional District seat today, one day after former city Controller Wendy Greuel said she would seek to succeed retiring Rep. Henry Waxman.

“I am running because I love America,” said Lieu, D-Torrance. “But our nation can do better. I have made the hard choices that helped turn California's budget deficit into a budget surplus, fought to protect our environment, co-authored legislation to divest California's pension funds from Iran's energy and nuclear industries and authored landmark civil rights legislation.”

Lieu's 28th Senate District includes more than 80 percent of the 33rd Congressional District, which covers Palos Verdes, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica and Malibu.

Lieu was elected in a 2011 special election, succeeding the late Jenny Oropeza. He served in the Assembly from 2005-2010.

Greuel, who lost to fellow Democrat Eric Garcetti in last year's mayor's race, told ABC7 she was excited and passionate about running, saying she would “fight for the communities, fight for those dollars that are critically important.”

“I'm ready to be that champion,” Greuel said.

Self-help author Marianne Williamson announced she would run as an independent against Waxman earlier.

Waxman, D-Beverly Hills, was elected to the first of his 20 consecutive terms in 1974.
