Weekend Planner: Festivals for Health, Clean Up and Halloween Fun

Jump on the community festival circuit this weekend for fun, education and giving back.

When/Where:  Saturday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.,  Children’s Community School (CCS) – 14702 Sylvan Street, Van Nuys

Why Go:  Children’s Community School presents their commitment to serving its surrounding Van Nuys community with their 15th Annual Health Fair. Health care professionals will provide the following FREE services to any adult or child who attends the health fair: “Seasonal Flu” Shots (180 available), Children’s immunizations (bring records), Blood pressure tests, Dental exams,Health education and information,Blood drive, HIV testing, Diabetes screening,Bone marrow registry, plus food, rides and children's activities.

Clean Up Sherman Oaks

When/Where: Saturday, 8:30 a.m. registration and refreshments; 9 a.m.-11 a.m. clean-up. Drop off/pick up location for the cleanup event is in the parking lot that separates the two vacant buildings between 14925 and 14945 Ventura Blvd. The cleanup area is from Kester To Noble Sherman Oaks. 

Why Go:  The Sherman Oaks Beautification Committee is partnering with the Buckley School on this yearly event to clean up part of Ventura Blvd.

Magical Mystery Show in North Hollywood

When/Where: Friday; Doors open at 8 p.m., Show starts at 7 p.m., Walter Reed Middle School, 4525 Irvine Ave. North Hollywood.

Why Go: Be entertained while raising funds for Friends of Reed at Walter Reed Middle School with proceeds going to its Music Boosters, Culinary Arts Academy and Arts Programs. As seen on Fox TV’s Masters of Illusion,  Gary, Mihaela snd Shany Carson will present a performance for all ages — a combination of music, magic, comedy, along with exotic animals and larger than life grand illusions.

Emelita Street School Family Fright Festival 

When/Where: Saturday, 3 p.m.-7 p.m., Emelita Street School, 17931 Hatteras Street, Encino 

Why Go: There will be games, prizes, music, contests, food trucks, slides, a Haunted House will equals to community fun.

Free Workout Weekend with Team In Training (TNT)

When: Saturday and Sunday, locations in Pasadena, Encino and Newbury Park. Pasadena Rose Bowl - Saturday 8:30 a.m., 360 North Arroyo Blvd. (meet outside of the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center next to the flag poles); Encino Balboa Park— Saturday, 8 a.m., 6300 Balboa Blvd. (meet at the parking lot past the playground along Lake Balboa); Newbury Park Road Runner Sports – Saturday, 9:30 a.m. 1714 Newbury Park, (meet inside the store).

Why Go: The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS’s) Team In Training of Greater Los Angeles will be hosting a Free Workout Weekend for those interested in completing a half or full marathon. Hosted by TNT certified coaches and staff, will feature an introduction to TNT, mini clinics, boot camp workouts and a 20 to 30  minute run, as well as team building exercises. Honored Teammates, individuals who are currently or have been treated for a blood cancer, will also be present to share their story.

Yoga Day LA 2011

When/Where: Saturday, 8 a.m. - 7 p.m.,Topanga Community Club Fairgrounds, 1440 N. Topanga Canyon Blvd.

Why Go: Yoga Day LA is the first annual outdoor Yoga event to be held in the Santa Monica mountains at the Topanga Community Club. The event  brings  the largest, most diverse Yoga community together for a single day. There will be six sessions conducted by top Yogis. All ages and fitness levels are welcome. Enjoy the marketplace  with  free Zico Coconut Water andPom Wonderful, plus retail vendors, healthy food and a farmers market.

Pricing: Festival is free; classes priced at $25 for a first class and $15 for the second class. Children under 12 are free.

The Pumpkin Fair at Dixie Canyon School

When/Where: Saturday, 11 a.m.- 8 p.m., 220 Dixie Canyon Ave. (just off Ventura Blvd.), Sherman Oaks

Why Go: Celebrate the season with a fun-filled day/eve of rides, gigantic bouncies, haunted house, carnival games, raffles, arts and crafts, silent auction, bumper cars, costume contest, kids hay maze, face painting, magicians, animal shows, special surprise guests, exciting music and entertainment! Over 75 local vendors plus tasty food from local restaurants and more!
