Week in Review: Pumpkins and Prop. 19

The Conejo Wellness Center, Agoura Hills' lone medicinal marijuana dispensary, is planning to resume business after a Superior Court judge found no basis for its allegations that the city and sheriff's department were keeping it from operating.

On Monday, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Anne I. Jones rejected the Conejo Wellness Center's request for a temporary restraining order that would block what the dispensary claimed was the city's attempt to keep it from conducting business.

We posted a story about fire season. The weather is supposed to warm up this coming week, reminding us that fire season has not passed. Fire Capt. Andy Doyle of Station 65 gives us tips to help us stay safe.

The subject of this week's Fresh from the Farmers Market was Halloween must-haves. The squash and gourd make good companions for the pumpkin this season, says Mira Reverente.

TUESDAY

We previewed Halloween on Hempstead. Every year, thousands of visitors from all over the San Fernando Valley make the trek to Agoura Hills to go trick-or-treating on the 5700 block of Hempstead Drive.

In our You Ask...Agoura Hills Patch Answers, we responded to this question: Why is the city's logo an oak tree leaf? Amy Brink, community services director for Agoura Hills, informed us that foliage has been the emblem since the city was established.

Patch covered the biannual Art Is Our Passion competition. There were 129 entries in 33 categories, which included pastels, watercolors, acrylics and mixed media. 

To help readers prepare for our first annual Pumpkin Patch Carving Contest, Kelsey Stuart offered tips on designing the best jack-o-lantern. 

WEDNESDAY

We reported on Tuesday's Las Virgenes Unified School District board meeting. Officials are concerned that with a new governor coming in, Sacramento may not provide the $2.8 million the district's been allotted in the state budget.

Patch previewed the Friday football game. The Chargers are looking to snap the Warriors' 21-game winning streak at Friday's Marmonte League game.

We posted a story about Agoura High grad Hayley Kiyoko, who has been busy opening for Justin Bieber and filming Cartoon Network Scooby-Doo and Disney Channel Lemonade Mouth movies.

THURSDAY

Halloween is a time for candy and costumes, and of course, carving out ghastly designs with the ones you love. But first, choose your pumpkin. Bob Coutts photographed a day at the pumpkin patch.

We posted a ride along essay by guest contributor Laura Varney. The USC journalism student learned that being a reporter takes some of the same skills as being a law enforcement officer.

Patch covered the Wednesday City Council meeting on camera. Agoura Hills' sole medical marijuana dispensary is now required by law to apply as a business with the city.

FRIDAY

The answer to this week's Landmark Agoura photo trivia was the "haunted" Malibou Lake. This remote spot, south of Mulholland Highway, began its existence as a resort and real estate development back in 1922.

We covered Willow Elementary's Halloween parade. Kindergarten kids and an old friend traipsed through campus Friday.

It was another tough night for the Chargers. The football team fell behind by 42 points to Westlake in the first half in a 49-13 loss.
