The Weekend Planner: It's Festivals Galore

Food, art, beer and Halloween thrills are the event highlights this week.

When/Where: Open daily through Oct. 31, Pierce College, 20800 Victory Blvd., Woodland Hills.

Why Go: See Spookley, the square pumpkin, and his friend Jack the scarecrow at the new Holiday Hill Farms stage show inside the pumpkin patch, where you can pick your own pumpkin. There's also a hay ride, kids' activities, farm animals and a 6-acre corn maze. For those who dare, after dark there's the FrightFair Scream Park featuring the "Factory of Nightmares" Haunted House  and the "Creatures of the Corn" Haunted Trail.

8th Annual Taste of Downtown Burbank

When/Where: Thursday, 5:30-9:30 p.m., downtown Burbank (four blocks on San Fernando Boulevard between Magnolia and Olive).

Why Go: Experience 40 of Burbank’s finest restaurants, a beer and wine garden, chef demonstrations and live music for a green culinary event. At the Main Stage will be blues legend Barbara Morrison, Vegas-style hipsters Phat Cat Swinger and KABC’s Merrill Schindler. Proceeds benefit the Burbank Community YMCA financial scholarship fund. With a commitment to zero waste, Burbank Recycle Center staff will distribute compostable plates, cups and utensils to attendees, and set up recycling and compost stations.

Pricing: Free admission; cost for food and vendors.

Free Metro Art Tour 

When/Where: The first Thursday and Saturday of each month, 7-9 p.m., Hollywood/Highland Metro Station, Hollywood Blvd. You can get to Hollywood from the 818 stops.

Why Go: Check out some incredible public art and ride the Metro for free. Learn how the Metro Art Department has commissioned over 300 artists to incorporate art into a wide array of transportation projects throughout L.A. County, including bus stops, rail stations, streetscapes, bus interiors and construction fences.

Pricing: Free.

Taste of Encino  

When/Where: Sunday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Ventura Boulevard, between Balboa Boulevard and Amestoy Avenue in Encino.

Why Go: It’s a community gathering with foods from around the world, local restaurants, a health and wellness pavillion, arts and craft vendors, business expo, children’s activities, entertainment, pumpkin patch, beer and wine garden and more.

Pricing: Free admission; cost for food and vendors.

Beer Art and Music Festival (BAM Fest)

When/Where: Sunday, 1-6 p.m., 18th Street Arts Center, 1639 18th St., Santa Monica.

Why Go: You can’t find an event like this in the 818—at least not yet—so it’s worth the drive to the 18th Street Arts Center in Santa Monica for the BAM (Beer, Art & Music) Fest, a celebration of locally produced art, music and California’s finest craft beers. Participants include 20 breweries, four bands, three galleries, open artist studios, an artist market and gourmet food trucks. All proceeds benefit the 18th Street Arts Center, a Santa Monica nonprofit organization.

Pricing: Pre-sale tickets, $35; $40 at the door. A ticket gets you a BAM Fest logo tasting glass and unlimited samplings, five hours of live music and exploration of artist studios and galleries. Food and vendors are extra.
