Summer Family Fun Guide: The Fourth

Homemade treats and a neighborhood parade are just the trick this Independence Day.

Fourth of July in Agoura Hills is as small-town as it gets—homemade treats, hometown parades, and a picnic under the stars. This year, Charlene Ross offers her guide to making this year's Independence Day with the family one to remember.

THE ALL-AMERICAN TREAT

Stay cool and keep your oven off by making the no-bake Rice Krispies Treats on Fourth of July morning. The simple recipe found on the side of the box takes less than 20 minutes and has only three ingredients: Rice Krispies, marshmallows, and butter. The smell of melted butter and marshmallows is enough to bring the summer memories of your youth rushing back to you, and your kids will love stirring the gooey mixture on the stove.

A HOMETOWN PARADE

What could be more patriotic than a hometown Fourth of July parade through streets with names like Liberty Canyon, Patrick Henry, United, Defender, or Revere Way? Last year, Agoura Hills resident Sheena Stephens was pining away for the old-fashioned holiday parades of her youth. She looked at her husband and said, "Let's have a parade tomorrow." Her family hung signs at the corner of Liberty Canyon and Country Glen at about 6 p.m. on July 3, inviting the neighborhood to participate in their parade the next morning.

"I told my kids that we might be the only ones who showed up and we would just walk around our neighborhood with our bikes and that would be fine," said Stephens. "We couldn't believe it the next morning when we came to the corner and there were about 70 people waiting to participate. There were even people on horseback and one girl brought a pet chicken in an Uncle Sam costume."

This year's Second Annual Liberty Canyon Fourth of July Parade will take place on Sunday at 10 a.m. The parade will commence where Liberty Canyon meets Country Glen, and travel south on Liberty Canyon Road, east on Park Vista, and north on Patrick Henry Place.

A FAMILY PICNIC

After the Liberty Canyon Parade, take a trip less than two miles away to Old Agoura Park. Bring a simple picnic of sandwiches, summer fruit, and of course your Rice Krispies treats. Lay out your picnic blanket under a tree and enjoy the quietness of the day and the one-on-one with your family before the barbecues and fireworks take the lawn and the sky.

Each week, Charlene Ross, an instructional assistant at Yerba Buena, along with being a Sumac and A.E. Wright mother, will steer you through a summer day in Agoura Hills with kids in tow. So skip day camp and turn to Patch's Summer Family Fun Guide every Friday for your itinerary.
