Skittles Needs Your Support

Help Skittles walk into a loving home.

Skittles is a 2-year-old Australian Shepherd Mix that was confiscated from a hoarding situation. Despite the fact that his back legs are severely deformed from a birth defect, he scooted his way up to the officers on the scene.

They fell for his sweet personality and brought him to the Agoura shelter where it was known he would receive proper medical attention through Malibu Pet Companions.

Malibu Pet Companions (MPC) was founded in 1998 by an Agoura Animal Shelter volunteer that wanted to find a way to fund medical care for treatable conditions for homeless animals residing at the shelter. MPC was formed as a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation and, as a result, has saved thousands of animal lives.

Many of those saved would never have received this second chance without MPC and would likely have been euthanized. Fortunately for the homeless pets at the Agoura shelter, MPC funds minor to major surgeries (including spay/neuter), diagnostic testing, prescription medicines, senior wellness exams and special foods.

MPC is a community-based, all volunteer organization. Volunteers foster animals in the privacy of their own homes, transport them to and from veterinary appointments and oversee their care while at the shelter. Volunteers receive no compensation for their time other than the gratitude from the homeless pets they care for.

MPC’s work would not be possible without support of local veterinarians who provide their services at discounted rate. Additionally, members of the public generously donate to the organization’s mission and allow them to give these animals a second chance at a healthier and brighter future.

Malibu Coast Animal Hospital (MCAH) has supported MPC for over 15 years. Their extraordinary dedication and compassion for homeless pets in need of medical care has no limits. Over the years each and every doctor and staff member affiliated with Malibu Coast Animal Hospital has given special care to discarded animals making no distinction to their homeless status.

MPC took Skittles to MCAH where Dr. Dean believes he can help Skittles and undo some of the deformity he presently has to cope with. His deformity doesn't keep Skittles from moving around, though it does keep him from walking normally and is always in a "sit" position. This little dog will face major and very expensive surgery and then will recover in foster care for approximately six weeks. During this time, he will have devoted care to ensure recovery success along with physical therapy–all thanks to MPC.

Though the discount received from MCAH will help defer some of the costs of Skittles surgery, you can help support his cause or contribute to MPC’s tireless efforts by making a tax deductible donation through:

• Pay Pal: Go to www.malibupetcompanions.org

• Check: Mail to MPC at P.O. Box 7401, Thousand Oaks, CA 91359

• Cash: Deliver to Agoura Animal Shelter, 29525 Agoura Rd., Agoura Hills, CA 91359

Skittles will be available for adoption soon and hopefully will "walk" straight into the arms of a loving family.

To choose Skittles when he is available, request ID A4531645. The Agoura Shelter is at 29525 Agoura Road, Agoura Hills. Occasionally pets have already been adopted. To check availability, call 818-991-0071 or visit the website.

Either way it is wrong and uses the race card as a "despicable stunt"

Not a hate crime at all. Just a very stupid kid trying to manipulate the system so he could beRead More granted a athletic transfer. One of the kids on the "hit list" was the perp. Really despicable stunt.

It is unfortunate that this incident happened at our local schools. The crime is a result ofRead More ignorance and lack of education. All members of our community regardless of their race, creed, or religion should be respected. Perhaps our community needs to introspect and see why this occurred and how further events can be prevented.

Thanks for your great perspective on this issue. We should all unplug once in awhile.

I think for the most part, people are mentally drained. Few take the time to sit back relaxRead More anymore. Even when we do have a minute to ourselves, we're constantly bombarded with emails, text messages and status updates. If we unplugged ourselves from our devices, we might find the serenity we all so desperately need. Turn your phone off, take a hike. Find a big tree next to a creek and sit under the shade. Enjoy nature. Listen to the sound of the water, the birds and the breeze as it moves through the brush. When you get back to nature, if only for a short time, you'll leave with a clear mind and feel revitalized. You're right---technology was supposed to make our lives more simple. Instead, it fuels the attention deficit disorder as our brain becomes a hashtag with a constant barrage of (often useless) news and updates. Although I'm young, I'd give anything to go back to the days where calling someone often led to a wild goose chase of finding an available payphone and spare change to make the call.

If you can't talk politics with friends without being able to agree to disagree or even end upRead More losing them as friends then they were not the "friends" you thought they were anyway.

It's not about moving forward, it's about saving your breath! That's the whole problem; too muchRead More talk and not enough action! You gonna eat that fish or just hold it up in the air?
Dave April 7, 2013 at 07:29 am
then again, if you only speak with people who agree with you, how do you ever move forward? aren'tRead More you just "spinning your wheels" staying in the same spot never moving forward?
