According to the SCE notice, the best way to prevent loss of data and/or damage to your electronic equipment is to shut off or disconnect all sensitive electronics, i.e. computers and fax machines, before the outage begins. In addition, use surge protectors, which can prevent a sudden surge of electricity from damaging them.
