Oct. 7: Reyes Adobe Days; Gymkhana Horse Playday

Take part in the RAD festivities, visit the King Gillette Visitor's Center and see Kenny Wayne Shepherd in concert.

2. Reyes Adobe Days: A Day at the Adobe

The free weekend festival of music and performance stages; rancho-theme activities for kids; pony rides; petting zoo; historical demonstrations; Art at the Adobe; a taste of 91301 featuring wine, beer, olives, and cheeses; food vendors; beer garden; museum tours and more runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Weekend entertainment includes marimba bands, strolling acts, and tribute headlining bands.

3. Gymkhana Horse Playday & BBQ

This event pays tribute to Agoura Hills's equestrian heritage with six fun contests held at the Old Agoura Equestrian Arena at 9 a.m. Fee to enter is $6 per contest or all six contests for $25 and participants must provide their own horse

4. Sustainable Sundays at the Santa Monica Mountains Visitor Center

Get a behind the scenes tour for what makes this the first Net-Zero Visitor Center in the National Park Service from 2-3 p.m. Then from 3-4 p.m., join the Sustainable Sunday Scavenger Hunt. Grab your digital camera or cell phone for this hunt. Talk with a ranger about what you find and earn a “green” prize! Meet by the fountain at King Gillette Ranch. NPS INFO: 805-370-2301

6. Kenny Wayne Shepherd at the Canyon Club

See the renowned blues guitarist perform at 9 p.m. Tickets are $49.

I think for the most part, people are mentally drained. Few take the time to sit back relaxRead More anymore. Even when we do have a minute to ourselves, we're constantly bombarded with emails, text messages and status updates. If we unplugged ourselves from our devices, we might find the serenity we all so desperately need. Turn your phone off, take a hike. Find a big tree next to a creek and sit under the shade. Enjoy nature. Listen to the sound of the water, the birds and the breeze as it moves through the brush. When you get back to nature, if only for a short time, you'll leave with a clear mind and feel revitalized. You're right---technology was supposed to make our lives more simple. Instead, it fuels the attention deficit disorder as our brain becomes a hashtag with a constant barrage of (often useless) news and updates. Although I'm young, I'd give anything to go back to the days where calling someone often led to a wild goose chase of finding an available payphone and spare change to make the call.
