Neglected Dusty Looking for Loving Home

This 13-year-old Lab needs a family who will pay her attention.

Dusty, a 13-year-old female Labrador, needs a true friend right now. Not only was she ignored and neglected in her former home for 13 years, but her best friend, with whom she lived her whole life, just passed away a week after they entered the shelter.

While the volunteers are showering her with love and attention, she seems to be pretty sad and in need of the loving comfort of a new friend who will keep her safe, close and take special care of her.

Here are some things you should know:

  • She is housebroken
  • She gets along with other dogs
  • She gets along with kids

The beauty of an older dog is that they tend to settle into a new home easily. They have also learned what it takes to get along with others and become part of the “pack,” having mellowed so they can focus on life and anything you may want to teach them.

They are less demanding of your attention because they don’t need the same amount of exercise that a puppy needs, and they’d rather cuddle up with you on the couch and take a nap. An older dog is a known commodity because you can easily assess their behavior and temperament, and you never have to guess how big they'll grow.

And don't worry about the cost of adopting an older dog. Vet attention and medication are needed at all ages and may or may not be more costly for an older dog. She had her senior wellness check-up and, other than a little bit of arthritis and mild dermatitis, she is in good health. She just needs the same things younger dogs do–good nutrition, love, attention, exercise and regular check-ups.

To choose Dusty, request ID A4425477. Occasionally, pets have already been adopted. To check availability, call 818-991-0071 or visit the

The information we received from the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's station was that a mentally illRead More patient was removed from the bus Sunday night. No one was harmed, officials said.

Thanks for your great perspective on this issue. We should all unplug once in awhile.

I think for the most part, people are mentally drained. Few take the time to sit back relaxRead More anymore. Even when we do have a minute to ourselves, we're constantly bombarded with emails, text messages and status updates. If we unplugged ourselves from our devices, we might find the serenity we all so desperately need. Turn your phone off, take a hike. Find a big tree next to a creek and sit under the shade. Enjoy nature. Listen to the sound of the water, the birds and the breeze as it moves through the brush. When you get back to nature, if only for a short time, you'll leave with a clear mind and feel revitalized. You're right---technology was supposed to make our lives more simple. Instead, it fuels the attention deficit disorder as our brain becomes a hashtag with a constant barrage of (often useless) news and updates. Although I'm young, I'd give anything to go back to the days where calling someone often led to a wild goose chase of finding an available payphone and spare change to make the call.

If you can't talk politics with friends without being able to agree to disagree or even end upRead More losing them as friends then they were not the "friends" you thought they were anyway.

It's not about moving forward, it's about saving your breath! That's the whole problem; too muchRead More talk and not enough action! You gonna eat that fish or just hold it up in the air?

then again, if you only speak with people who agree with you, how do you ever move forward? aren'tRead More you just "spinning your wheels" staying in the same spot never moving forward?
