How to Get Around and Out of the 818 During 'Carmageddon'

Take a free Metro Rail or bus ride—or charter a helicopter.

t’s the weekend of Carmageddon, so if you’re looking for a great escape, you have a few choices—explore your local community, ride a bike, take public transportation by bus or rail for free, or if you’re able to splurge for something a bit more extravagant and need to get to LAX, the Westside or downtown—charter a helicopter.

Briles Wing & Helicopter, Inc., based on the east side of Van Nuys Airport (VNY) is offering one-way and round-trip “Skybridge” jet helicopter shuttle service to LAX, Santa Monica Airport and downtown L.A. beginning Friday, July 15 from noon to 7 p.m.; Saturday-Sunday, July 16-17 from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Monday, July 18 from 7 a.m. and continue as needed. The helicopter service will operate between Briles’ office and ramp area at VNY and Landmark Aviation, 6201 West Imperial Highway at LAX. Landmark will provide van-type ground transportation to and from all LAX terminals. For prices, parking, luggage weight limits, flight duration and other info: Phone (818) 994-1445 or e-mail mick@toflyla.com. Briles Wing & Helicopter is located at 16303 Waterman Drive, Van Nuys, CA 91406 (entrance off Woodley Avenue between Roscoe Boulevard and Saticoy).

If you’ve never taken advantage of the Los Angeles Metro Rail and bus routes, this is the perfect time to try it. There will be free rides on the Metro Orange, Red and Purple lines as well as on 26  bus lines via the Metro in areas most affected by the 405 shutdown.

Here's a list of bus lines offering free rides July 16-17. For more information, go to metro.net.

The information we received from the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's station was that a mentally illRead More patient was removed from the bus Sunday night. No one was harmed, officials said.

John, it was reported on KTLA. You can find it at KTLA.com and do a search of "Agoura HighRead More graffiti."

Bob, who reported it was one of the kids on the list?

Either way it is wrong and uses the race card as a "despicable stunt"

Thanks for your great perspective on this issue. We should all unplug once in awhile.

I think for the most part, people are mentally drained. Few take the time to sit back relaxRead More anymore. Even when we do have a minute to ourselves, we're constantly bombarded with emails, text messages and status updates. If we unplugged ourselves from our devices, we might find the serenity we all so desperately need. Turn your phone off, take a hike. Find a big tree next to a creek and sit under the shade. Enjoy nature. Listen to the sound of the water, the birds and the breeze as it moves through the brush. When you get back to nature, if only for a short time, you'll leave with a clear mind and feel revitalized. You're right---technology was supposed to make our lives more simple. Instead, it fuels the attention deficit disorder as our brain becomes a hashtag with a constant barrage of (often useless) news and updates. Although I'm young, I'd give anything to go back to the days where calling someone often led to a wild goose chase of finding an available payphone and spare change to make the call.

If you can't talk politics with friends without being able to agree to disagree or even end upRead More losing them as friends then they were not the "friends" you thought they were anyway.

It's not about moving forward, it's about saving your breath! That's the whole problem; too muchRead More talk and not enough action! You gonna eat that fish or just hold it up in the air?
Dave April 7, 2013 at 07:29 am
then again, if you only speak with people who agree with you, how do you ever move forward? aren'tRead More you just "spinning your wheels" staying in the same spot never moving forward?
