Feb. 21: Kids Story Time; Jake Shimabukuro

Take the kids to story time at the Interagency Visitor Center, take a lunch-time technology forum and tour the Getty Villa Collection.

2. Story Time at the Visitors Center

Meet at the Santa Monica Mountains Interagency Visitor Center (26876 Mulholland Highway, Calabasas) from 10-11 a.m. Take the kids to enjoy a few new stories each week and talk about what you can explore further while in the Santa Monica Mountains. The program is for ages 5 and under. For information, call 805-370-2301.

3. Greater Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce Technology Forum

Bring your own brownbag lunch and join the Greater Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce for their monthly Technology Forum from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the chamber’s Janet Levett Conference Center, 600 Hampshire Road, Suite 202, Westlake Village. The forum is free to chamber members and non-members can attend for a $10 fee. Register online at www.conejochamber.org or call 805.370.0035 for further information.

4. Getty Villa Collection Highlights Tour

Get an overview of major works from the Getty Villa's collection during the Collections Highlights Tour. The one-hour tour is held daily at 2 p.m. every week day, with the exception of Tuesday. Space is limited for this tour, so please arrive 15 minutes before the tour to sign up at the "Tour Meeting Place."Admission is free. Parking during business hours is $15 per car or motorcycle.

5. Jake Shimabukuro at the Canyon Club

See the ukulele virtuoso perform at 9 p.m. Tickets are $35.

It is unfortunate that this incident happened at our local schools. The crime is a result ofRead More ignorance and lack of education. All members of our community regardless of their race, creed, or religion should be respected. Perhaps our community needs to introspect and see why this occurred and how further events can be prevented.

I think for the most part, people are mentally drained. Few take the time to sit back relaxRead More anymore. Even when we do have a minute to ourselves, we're constantly bombarded with emails, text messages and status updates. If we unplugged ourselves from our devices, we might find the serenity we all so desperately need. Turn your phone off, take a hike. Find a big tree next to a creek and sit under the shade. Enjoy nature. Listen to the sound of the water, the birds and the breeze as it moves through the brush. When you get back to nature, if only for a short time, you'll leave with a clear mind and feel revitalized. You're right---technology was supposed to make our lives more simple. Instead, it fuels the attention deficit disorder as our brain becomes a hashtag with a constant barrage of (often useless) news and updates. Although I'm young, I'd give anything to go back to the days where calling someone often led to a wild goose chase of finding an available payphone and spare change to make the call.
