Benefit Planned for 101 Freeway Crash Victim

A benefit concert for Gilani Taylor is being held on Saturday at Crave in Ventura at 9 p.m.

A benefit concert is being held on Saturday for the woman who was badly burned and lost her young daughter in a fiery crash on the 101 Freeway, the Ventura County Star Reports.

On Oct. 1, 28-year-old Gilani Taylor of Oxnard was driving in her 1995 Chrysler on the southbound 101 Freeway near Las Virgenes Road when her , according to the California Highway Patrol.

Taylor's 9-year-old daughter Jayla was killed in the crash, while Taylor suffered burns over 90 percent of her body. She remains hospitalized USC Medical Center.

Taylor is an aspiring pop and R&B singer and was organizing a musical showcase called "Ladies of the 805" that would be performed at the Ventura nightclub Crave.

The show has been canceled and replaced with a benefit concert for Taylor's family. The program begins at 9 p.m. and attendees are being asked to donate what they can.

"We're going to try to do whatever we can to help the family on a financial level as well as on a support level," Crave owner Sheldon Schulsinger told the Star.

Crave is located at 281 W. Main St. in Ventura.
