5 Things You Need to Know Today: Oct. 20

Life writing lessons and more rain are on the agenda.

Welcome to "5 Things You Need to Know Today," a new Patch column where we give you essential information at a glance. Check back each day for more, and let us know what you think of this new feature in the comments.

  1. And now for the weather: the National Weather Service predicts for today a chance of showers and thunderstorms before 11 a.m., and a high near 67 degrees, which is just a tad better than yesterday. Agoura Hills received .12 inches of rainfall. Let's hope there won't be any power outages.
  2. Speaking of disasters, did you know that Agoura Hills has a fully functional, consistently trained Disaster Response Team that goes by the name of CERT? Pop into the weekly board meeting at 7 p.m. to learn more about these local heroes.
  3. Do you ever feel wise beyond years? Maybe it's time to write your first novel. Retired speech and drama, English and creative writing high school teacher Louise Cabral invites guests into her home on Mulhullond Highway every Wednesday evening for lessons in life writing.
  4. Heard of the National Park Service's Rim of the Valley Corridor Special Resources Study? It examines the expansion of Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area and, if approved, would increase hiking, wildlife viewing, and biking opportunities for Agourans. Find out more in this week's Wild Agoura.
  5. The lowest price for regular gas in Agoura Hills is $3.15 per gallon, as reported by www.losangelesgasprices.com. And the winner is: 76 Gas Station at 30245 Canwood St. and Reyes Adobe Road.
