Unemployment in L.A. County Drops Below 9 Percent

The 8.9 percent unemployment rate was below the 10.3 percent rate in January 2013. But it's still higher than the state average.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in Los Angeles County decreased to 8.9 percent in January, down from a revised 9.2 percent in December, the state Employment Development Department announced today.

The 8.9 percent unemployment rate was below the 10.3 percent rate in January 2013, according to the EDD.

California's jobless rate was 8.1 percent in January, down from 8.3 percent in December and below the 9.5 percent rate in January 2013, according to the EDD.

The comparable estimates for the nation were 6.6 percent in January, 6.7 percent in December and 7.9 percent a year ago.

Total nonfarm employment decreased by 62,600 jobs in Los Angeles County between December and January to reach 4.1 million. The trade, transportation and utilities sector accounted for the bulk of the decrease, losing 17,900 jobs, according to the EDD.
