Tasty Tidbits: Karen Young's Valley Restaurant and Food Round Up

Find out what's in, what's out, and specials around town in this roundup of restaurant news around the San Fernando Valley.

From French to British: As fast as new restaurants are surfacing in the 818 (especially those with westside pedigree), some old ones are saying adieu.  Pinot Bistro, part of Joachim Splichal's The Patina Group, which has been a Studio City fixture for 20 years, closed shop on February 19 due to the lease ending. Santa Monica's popular Ye Olde King's Head, a restaurant, pub and shop carrying British goods, will takes its place.

Having an Oscar party? Make it extra special with Sweet Butter Kitchen in Sherman Oaks. They'll have hand decorated Oscar cookies (yes, shaped like Oscar!) in addition to a full display of cookies, cakes, bars, petit fours, French macarons....and more. Check out the Winter Catering Menu online, or choose a variety of platters, including french sandwiches, crudite, cheese, fruit, Mediterranean and charcuterie. For appetizers, there's such choices as guacamole with homemade lime tortilla chips and blue cheese dip with homemade potato chips. Make sure your order is placed 48 hours ahead.

Breakfast for dinner? Indulge at Hugo's in Agoura, Studio City and West Hollywood. A select menu includes Chilaquiles, Pasta Mama (the original with eggs), Pasta Papa (the super duper with bacon and chicken sausage), Pasta Emilia (avocado, tomato and cilantro), Red Pozole and Eggs, Herbed Omelette, Desayuno Fuerte (two poached eggs over potato pancakes with sauteed spinach and parmesan), Breakfast Salad, BYO Omelet or Scramble, Chipotle Scramble and Protein Scramble.

Get comedy and BBQ with Smoke City Market in Sherman Oaks on Thursday, February 23  when the eatery hosts the Gary Garver Radio Show from 7 p.m.-8 p.m., followed by a live Comedy Night.

Every Wednesday Night starting at 5 p.m. is Wine Down Wednesday at Spark Woodfire Grill in Studio City. 50% off select bottles of wine. The selection of over 50 wines changes weekly.

Either way it is wrong and uses the race card as a "despicable stunt"

Not a hate crime at all. Just a very stupid kid trying to manipulate the system so he could beRead More granted a athletic transfer. One of the kids on the "hit list" was the perp. Really despicable stunt.

It is unfortunate that this incident happened at our local schools. The crime is a result ofRead More ignorance and lack of education. All members of our community regardless of their race, creed, or religion should be respected. Perhaps our community needs to introspect and see why this occurred and how further events can be prevented.

Thanks for your great perspective on this issue. We should all unplug once in awhile.

I think for the most part, people are mentally drained. Few take the time to sit back relaxRead More anymore. Even when we do have a minute to ourselves, we're constantly bombarded with emails, text messages and status updates. If we unplugged ourselves from our devices, we might find the serenity we all so desperately need. Turn your phone off, take a hike. Find a big tree next to a creek and sit under the shade. Enjoy nature. Listen to the sound of the water, the birds and the breeze as it moves through the brush. When you get back to nature, if only for a short time, you'll leave with a clear mind and feel revitalized. You're right---technology was supposed to make our lives more simple. Instead, it fuels the attention deficit disorder as our brain becomes a hashtag with a constant barrage of (often useless) news and updates. Although I'm young, I'd give anything to go back to the days where calling someone often led to a wild goose chase of finding an available payphone and spare change to make the call.

If you can't talk politics with friends without being able to agree to disagree or even end upRead More losing them as friends then they were not the "friends" you thought they were anyway.

It's not about moving forward, it's about saving your breath! That's the whole problem; too muchRead More talk and not enough action! You gonna eat that fish or just hold it up in the air?
Dave April 7, 2013 at 07:29 am
then again, if you only speak with people who agree with you, how do you ever move forward? aren'tRead More you just "spinning your wheels" staying in the same spot never moving forward?
