Local Businesses Hold 'Holiday Fare'

Stores located at the Whizin Market Square offer the community holiday food and fun Saturday following Santa Comes to Westlake/Agoura & Beyond

Local businesses within Whizin Market Square joined together Saturday to host a 'Holiday Fare.'

Leslie Brenner, co-owner of Hugo's Restaurant, created the event to follow the popular which was held next door at the Do It Center.

"The revitalization of Whizin Market Square was always accompanied by a

vision of the area becoming an active community center," said Brenner. "Many of the businesses came here with that in mind, so even though the renovation isn't complete, it was easy to take the next step of combining our efforts to become that community center we want to be by creating 'Holiday Fair.'"

As part of the festivities, businesses offered demonstrations, food tastings, raffles and activities.

Tifa Chocolate & Gelato will be moving to Whizin's in January of 2013. Consequently, Mike Ashmalla, owner of the family-run business, was on-hand to offer tastings of a variety of chocolates as well as of their renowned homemade gelatos.

"We have chocolate from around the world–Italy, France, Belgium, Madagascar–and we brought three of our gelatos: dark chocolate, peppermint bark and our strawberry-rose sorbetto," he said, indicating his spread.

The Hugo's table offered tea and food samplings.

"We're trying to build a community here," said Emily Kaplan, co-owner of the restaurant. "Business comes second to that, and we wanted to get into the holiday spirit."

Either way it is wrong and uses the race card as a "despicable stunt"

Not a hate crime at all. Just a very stupid kid trying to manipulate the system so he could beRead More granted a athletic transfer. One of the kids on the "hit list" was the perp. Really despicable stunt.

It is unfortunate that this incident happened at our local schools. The crime is a result ofRead More ignorance and lack of education. All members of our community regardless of their race, creed, or religion should be respected. Perhaps our community needs to introspect and see why this occurred and how further events can be prevented.

Thanks for your great perspective on this issue. We should all unplug once in awhile.

I think for the most part, people are mentally drained. Few take the time to sit back relaxRead More anymore. Even when we do have a minute to ourselves, we're constantly bombarded with emails, text messages and status updates. If we unplugged ourselves from our devices, we might find the serenity we all so desperately need. Turn your phone off, take a hike. Find a big tree next to a creek and sit under the shade. Enjoy nature. Listen to the sound of the water, the birds and the breeze as it moves through the brush. When you get back to nature, if only for a short time, you'll leave with a clear mind and feel revitalized. You're right---technology was supposed to make our lives more simple. Instead, it fuels the attention deficit disorder as our brain becomes a hashtag with a constant barrage of (often useless) news and updates. Although I'm young, I'd give anything to go back to the days where calling someone often led to a wild goose chase of finding an available payphone and spare change to make the call.

If you can't talk politics with friends without being able to agree to disagree or even end upRead More losing them as friends then they were not the "friends" you thought they were anyway.

It's not about moving forward, it's about saving your breath! That's the whole problem; too muchRead More talk and not enough action! You gonna eat that fish or just hold it up in the air?
Dave April 7, 2013 at 07:29 am
then again, if you only speak with people who agree with you, how do you ever move forward? aren'tRead More you just "spinning your wheels" staying in the same spot never moving forward?
