Landmark Agoura: Whizin's Shopping Center

Go back in time for the answer to our first trivia question.

Near the corner of Kanan Road and Roadside Drive sits the distinctive sight of Whizin Market Square arcade. Anchored by the popular music venue the Canyon Club, with its landmark green clock tower, this Agoura Hills commercial and retail center is both rustic and contemporary.

The brainchild of pioneer Art Whizin, this location has been evolving since it took shape in the 1950s. A number of different names are associated with various parts of the complex. One dating back decades was the name Cornell Corners. Another was Vance Moran, who helmed the center when the Canyon was a community theater, staging musicals such as Annie, accompanied by dinner. Next to take over was Art's son, Bruce Whizin.

Entering the funky complex today is a step back in time. "All wheels in the rustic arcade are vintage of the late 1880s," states one sign on the wooden walls. Another sign proclaims: "One of the oldest cornhuskers, vintage 1895." Look for the impressive mural that lauds the winning of the West and famous folk  such as Red Cloud, Wild Bill Hickcock and Buffalo Bill.

All over, Wild West decor mixes with neighborhood services, shops and dining, including a law office, insurance agency, entertainment agent and antique jewelry as well as reliable Mexican food at the atmospheric Latigo Kid. Various uses have included a grocery store, a party rental venue replete with four ballrooms, reception room, and eventually an all-you-can-eat buffet dining spot.

Famous at one point for being a watering hole and food stop on the rustic route between Los Angeles and Ventura, what you see at Whizin's is unlike any other location. Despite decades of revamping the arcade, Whizin's remains an eclectic fusion of styles to accommodate the rotating parade of lifestyles and tastes in Agoura Hills.
