Hugo's Benefits Walk/Run for Pancreatic Cancer

Lustgarten Foundation’s Westlake Village Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk/Run in conjunction with Hugo’s Restaurant has designated Jan. 17 as the official kickoff for the pancreatic cancer charity’s fourth annual 10K/5K/1K fundraising effort.

Tuesday night, between 5 and 10, Hugo’s will donate 20% of all proceeds to PAM’s Run for Pancreatic Research.

The 10K/5K/1K event celebrates the life of Pam Bardwil, who was an avid runner and active member of the Westlake Village community. The run will be held Feb. 11 at Westlake Village City Hall. Event planners, who raised more than $120,000 last year, expect over 1,000 participants.
Hugo’s, whose menu promotes the health and welfare associated with eating well, has a long history of supporting its community.

“This is a remarkable event held in the name of a remarkable woman. We are proud that we can be a part of their fundraising efforts,” said Tom Kaplan, co-owner of Hugo’s.

PAM's Run occurs on the Valentine’s Day weekend, allowing Pam’s two daughters, Kristen and Jessica, to honor their mother with a different kind of gift—not one of flowers or chocolate—but one of remembrance and determination to make a difference for others.

Since Kristen and Jessica started the walk/run four years ago, the event has grown from a family- and friend-supported event and personal mission to one that embraces the pancreatic cancer community at large and has the full support of the Lustgarten Foundation, the nation’s largest private funder of pancreatic cancer research. Additionally, due to Cablevision Systems Corp.'s multi-year commitment to underwrite all of the Lustgarten Foundation’s administrative expenses, 100 percent of every dollar raised will go directly to pancreatic cancer research.

“We started this event because we knew that a 5K/10K race that promoted pancreatic cancer awareness while celebrating life was a perfect way to capture our mom’s energy and spirit,” said Jessica Bardwil. “She had an amazing ability to connect with and inspire people, even when she was fighting her own battle. We wanted to continue bringing this hope to others whose lives have been affected by this disease, and we can do that now through this event.”

Added Kristen Bardwil, “Our mom was a longtime runner with an affinity for helping others, so it’s really special to be able to share this day with so many others fighting this same battle.”

The Run/Walk will take place on Feb. 11, 2012, at 9 a.m., beginning in the courtyard of Westlake Village City Hall, 31200 Oak Crest Dr., Westlake Village. (Registration begins at 7:30 a.m). The Lustgarten Foundation was founded in 1998 through the efforts of Marc Lustgarten, former chairman of Madison Square Gardens, who died of pancreatic cancer in 1999, and Charles F. Dolan, chairman of Cablevision Systems Corp. Since its founding, the Lustgarten Foundation has awarded grants totaling more than $38 million in support of pancreatic cancer research.
