Bakery Gets Makeover, New Owner

Following a legal dispute with the owner of Stone Ground Bakery, a business partner has established Wildflour Bakery & Cafe at the same Canwood location.

Greg Yulish used to be a customer of the original Stone Ground Bakery when it was at its old location off of Kanan Road because he loved the raisin challah. He liked it so much, he became an investor in 2010.

"I am a CPA by profession, and my goal is about building brands and taking businesses to the next level," Yulish said.

Yulish invested his funds to build the current facility off Canwood Road, but the business under the previous owner ended in a legal entanglement.

"When it went to bankruptcy auction, we decided to participate and won," he said. Yulish and wife, Lisa, officially took over on Feb. 17 and renamed the establishment Wildflour Bakery & Cafe.

He recently hired a new pastry chef from northern California and a chef from Cafe Firenze to create gourmet sandwiches and pizza.

"My goal for the [new endeavor] is to focus on quality over quantity," said Yulish. "You're not going to see shelves overflowing with items. We'd rather produce less that's better than more that's just OK."

In addition to producing fresh breads, challahs and pastry items at the store, Wildflour also sells items to Trader Joe's in 13 states. "We sell them challah, little bundt cakes, and will be selling coconut macaroons beginning next week," he said.

Yulish also hopes to give back to the community by offering jobs to local high school students as well as to moms and dads looking for a few hours of work.

The official grand opening is still a few weeks away, but the bakery, located at 29105 Canwood St., is open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday-Saturday; and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays.
