Week in Review: Ballroom Dancing and Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Celebrity dancer Damian Whitewood begins teaching in Agoura Hills, and a gourmet store offering an extensive selection of olive oil and balsamic vinegar opens.

Ballroom has waltzed its way into Agoura Hills thanks to Dancing with the Stars veteran Damian Whitewood, and a new store features the most extensive array of extra virgin olive oil this side of town, with 22 flavors in all.

MONDAY

Jonathan Dunker and his 7-year-old son Quinn told us why they love Agoura Hills,  and I.C. Rosen wrote about becoming a soccer dad in his Fieldside View.

Patch followed up on the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff Station open house cancellation. SWAT team members and other specially trained deputies couldn't be scheduled for the event because of a lack of funds for overtime pay.

TUESDAY

The Olive Vineyard was the subject of this week's Invisible Business. A foray into this olive oil and balsamic vinegar store's tasting room turned into a barrage of the senses and the consummate educational experience.

Patch reviewed the Agoura High football team's performance against Ventura in its season opener. The Chargers' defense gave up a lot of yards and a lot of points in the 35-34 victory over Ventura, but it also made some huge plays.

Mira Reverente taught us the difference between hybrid and heirloom produce at the Farmers Market.

WEDNESDAY

Test scores released by the state Monday delivered good news for Las Virgenes Unified schools, with all 15 meeting the state-set goal. The district as a whole scored 882, up from 874 last year, with Yerba Buena's 934 the top mark.

We posted a video on the Conejo Valley Homeschooler's Park Day. The social gathering helped kick off another academic year for those outside the traditional school system.

THURSDAY

Patch followed up with Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff Station Capt. Joseph Stephen about Los Angeles County sheriffs taking a full minute longer compared with their 2009 average to get to the scenes of 911 emergencies.

Agoura Hills' very own community emergency response team garnered first place in the fire suppression portion of the 2010 CERT Invitational.

FRIDAY

The subject of this week's Agoura Mom Files was homework. Charlene Ross posed the question: How much homework is too much for our kids? 

We wrote about three students who held a benefit concert on the Agoura High campus to raise money for a charity that helps people struggling with depression or addiction.

Patch launched Landmark Agoura with Whizin's Shopping Center as our first answer in the trivia series.

SATURDAY

Patch interviewed Agoura Hills Dance's newest instructor, Dancing with the Stars veteran Damian Whitewood.

We covered a candlelight vigil for Mitrice Richardson. Family and friends gathered outside the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station to remember the 24-year-old woman who died after being released from custody there.

The Agoura High football team erased a two-touchdown deficit for the second game in a row, but this time came up a little short, losing to Simi Valley 41-35.
